Job Details: San Felipe - Houston, TX 77056; Position Type: Full Time; Education Level: Graduate Degree; Travel Percentage: Up to 25%; Job Shift: Day; Job Category: Legal. The Staff Attorney (Unaccompanied Children Program) is responsible for providing direct legal representation to clients served by St Frances Cabrini Center for Legal Assistance in immigration matters. The Staff Attorney works under the direct supervision of Senior Attorney, Managing Attorney and/or Associate Legal Director and as a team with the Legal Assistant/Paralegal and other Cabrini Center staff. Responsibilities Legal Assistance Provide legal assistance and direct representation to immigrant clients before the USCIS, Asylum Office, Immigration Court, and related agencies. Conduct legal intake and screening, interview clients and witnesses, draft, prepare, and assemble relevant immigration petitions. Conduct legal research; write memoranda of law, motions, or briefs supporting applications and petitions filed before USCIS, asylum office, courts, and administrative agencies. Prepare clients for interviews or court hearings and perform interpretations as needed. Provide direct representation to minors detained in ORR custody and appear as Friend of Court at juvenile dockets when appropriate. Case Management Maintain client physical and electronic files, case notes, correspondence, filings, calendars, and dockets. Maintain a case status list and case service statistics for Cabrini Center and program funders. Participate in case reviews with Senior Attorney, Managing Attorney or Associate Legal Director as applicable. Maintain a minimum of 30‑40 active cases and stay abreast of new immigration regulations and policies. Meetings Attendance and participation is mandatory in team meetings, Cabrini staff meetings, and other agency meetings. Participate in calls and meetings organized by funders, city‑wide advocacy groups, and local service providers when appropriate. Contract and Agency Compliance Comply with all contract requirements and provide data and statistical information for grants, contracts, and reporting purposes. Submit accurate and timely monthly data, time logs, and reports for internal use, funder use, and other entities. Participate in trainings, webinars, meetings, calls, etc. as required by funders. Charlas and Outreach Participate in Charlas by presenting and performing legal consultations. Engage in program and agency community legal education and outreach efforts (Spanish and English) related to immigration law and remedies for survivors of crime. Provide direct information to prospective clients and attend informational sessions on asylum, deportation, and other immigration relief. Mentorship Provide mentorship and direction to Legal Assistant, Paralegal and/or interns on a full range of legal services provided by the program. Other Perform other duties as assigned by the Legal Director and Managing Attorneys such as assisting with in‑house meetings and trainings, coordinating with community partners, engaging in coalition activities, participating in staff and agency retreats, and assisting with special events. Qualifications Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree from an ABA accredited law school. Licensed by the Supreme Court of Texas and a member of the State Bar of Texas; or to take the earliest available bar exam and obtain license no later than one (1) year of employment date. Bilingual in Spanish and English. Skills and Assets Excellent legal research and legal writing skills. Excellent verbal and written communication and negotiation skills. Ability to handle a high‑volume caseload, multiple deadlines, and other tasks simultaneously. Knowledge and proficiency in basic typing skills and computer applications such as MS Office. Demonstrated multi‑cultural skills and sensitivity. Ability to handle and maintain confidential information. Experience working with low‑income immigrant community.
