Duties & Responsibilities:

Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Division ofTransplant Surgery is to provide excellence in clinical care, theadvancement of science through research, and the training ofundergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. TheDepartment fosters a level of professional activity essential tothe graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. TheDivision provides faculty with clinical and research experiencesthat prepare them for their professional careers. Finally, facultyhave a responsibility to provide service to their profession and tothe university community.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery atVCU/VCU Health System is recruiting for collateral, non-tenuretrack faculty position in the area of transplant surgery. Dutieswill include all responsibilities of the team attendings (inpatientrounds, clinics, consults, transplant surgeries as primary andassistant surgeon, call, education, quality assurance). Thetransplant team procures its own donor organs, and this positionwill also serve in support of that mission. The faculty member willsupport the division in teaching responsibilities at the VCUMedical Center.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching : Faculty member will have teachingresponsibilities in all areas of transplant surgery.

Research : Faculty member will establish clinical researchprojects with a record of publication in refereed journals andexternal funding. They are expected to develop interdisciplinarycollaborations to enhance the research program in at VCU. Inaddition, they will mentor both undergraduate and graduate studentsin their research laboratory.

Service : Faculty will serve on departmental and/or hospitalcommittees as necessary and participate in regional and nationalprofessional organizations

Clinical : Clinical responsibilities will be in the care ofthe Transplant Surgery patients on the MCV campus of VCU, as wellas community facilities, will include deceased and living donorkidney and liver transplantation, and pancreas transplantation.Additional opportunities exist with an extensive multidisciplinaryhepato-biliary surgery practice as well as dialysis access (hemoand peritoneal).

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be board certified/board eligible in transplant surgery orequivalent
• ASTS fellowship training in multi-organ transplantation andprocurement
• Able to meet licensing requirements in Virginia, and be UNOScertified or eligible
• Prior experience teaching residents and medical students
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment ofrespect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty,staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or acommitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

• Board certification in general surgery will be expected duringthe course of the appointment, commensurate with boardrequirements
• Training in robotic surgery
