Why This Role Matters The Membership Manager is an essential member of ABA’s Membership team, providing data management and administrative support, as well as customer service to ABA members. This role owns the full member lifecycle — from onboarding through renewal and retention — with a particular focus on strategic engagement of all classes of ABA membership. The Membership Manager builds data-driven engagement strategies, cultivates relationships and retention with members and communities, and ensures members across all disciplines and career stages experience the full value of ABA membership. What You’ll Do Implement Comprehensive Membership Engagement/Retention Plan Serve as an initial voice of customer service for members and then escalation member questions as appropriate to the ABA team. Coordinate and lead meetings and tailor engagement communications to provide valuable and timely information for our members. Oversee retention, engagement, renewal, and upgrade strategies. Coordinate outreach to new members during their first and second year of membership to ensure an excellent return on investment for new members. Produce meeting packets and prep materials for member recruitment and engagement meetings by the ABA staff. Manage Membership Dues Renewal Process Organize the coordination, communications, and invoicing of all ABA members. Work closely with the finance and operations teams on invoicing, renewals, contracts, and membership dues revenue tracking. Coordinate across departments to create engagement profiles for members, providing a look back at the value they gained from membership. Systems, Data & Process Oversee AMS systems and membership data to ensure accuracy, consistency, and usefulness. Also manages the relationship with the AMS vendor. Continuously improve membership processes, documentation, and workflows Use data and member feedback to inform continuous improvement of the membership experience. What You Bring 4 – 6 years of experience in an operational, administrative, or membership role. Experience at a non-profit or association is preferable. Customer service experience required. Strong writing, editing, and message-development skills, with the ability to tailor communications for distinct audiences. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, coordinate stakeholders, and maintain organized workflows and content calendars. Highly collaborative, with strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with multiple teams. Ability to support live events, including occasional travel (up to 15%), and on-site execution ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic, hybrid work environment. BA or BS from an accredited institution required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, and particularly Excel, required. Experience working with databases and/or an Association Management System (AMS). Candidates need the ability to lift objects of up to 25 lbs. Location | Work-Life This is a hybrid position (not eligible for fully remote) with 3 days per week expected in ABA’s Washington, DC office in Navy Yard.
