Lead Chemistry Laboratory Supervisor

Exemption Status: Exempt Hiring Range: $75,108.80 - $135,220.80 Schedule Details: Monday through Friday Scheduled Hours: 7am-3:30pm Shift: 1 - Day Shift, 8 Hours (United States of America) Hours: 40 Cost Center: 24050 - 3110 Lab Administration This position may have a signing bonus available; a member of the Recruitment Team will confirm eligibility during the interview process. This position is responsible for the planning, direction, and supervision of all technical aspects of the assigned department within the laboratory to ensure the safe and efficient performance of departmental operations. Major Responsibilities Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized technical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems. Develops, implements, and monitors quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment, and compliance with federal regulations; prepares and maintains applicable records. Designs appropriate work schedules for subordinate employees, including student rotations, and plans daily work assignments to maintain an adequate personnel complement for laboratory efficiency. Interprets accrediting agencies' standards or guidelines for laboratory testing programs and translates requirements into policies and procedures; initiates corrective action as soon as deficiencies are identified; completes checklists and other required information sheets and coordinates on‑site inspections of the relevant sections. Maintains sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties; cleans and maintains standard laboratory equipment within budgetary guidelines. Provides advanced problem‑solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, and verification of specimen quality and test results. Resolves customer problems, complaints, or criticisms; documents problem‑solving efforts and significant customer/patient communications; investigates and resolves department‑related safety events. Encourages professional growth and development of personnel through continuing education programs and competency assessment. Stays abreast of and executes the latest technical and management developments, including new laboratory procedures. Demonstrates decision‑making abilities in all aspects of performance. Standard Supervisor Level Responsibilities Supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training; makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions; resolves grievances and other personnel problems within the position responsibilities. Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems; evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved. Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork, motivation, and fosters effective integration of efforts with system‑wide initiatives. Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility, and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors. Integrates diversity into departmental objectives such as hiring, promotions, training, and vendor selections. Participates in performance‑improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as the Joint Commission, DPH, etc.; develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements. Ensures that the department complies with hospital‑established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures. Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for the department. Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Ensures compliance with all health and safety regulations and requirements. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed. Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education: Required: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field. Preferred: American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent. Experience / Skill: Required: Minimum two (2) years of experience in moderate and high‑complexity testing. Required: Thorough knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures and instrumentation. Required: Considerable knowledge of regulatory standards, safety, infection control practices, and the chemical hygiene plan. Required: Ability to lead, guide, and motivate others. Required: Ability to read, write, and speak clearly in English. Preferred: Minimum five (5) years of moderate and high‑complexity testing in a clinical laboratory of similar or larger size. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department‑specific competencies, including age‑specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
