Posting Number S12586P Working Title Registered Veterinary Technician Department VetMed-Academic Affairs Position Summary The primary purpose and function of the Veterinary Technician is to support veterinarians in teaching veterinary students clinical skills, including technical procedures and animal care. Minimum Qualifications Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2‑year degree, or a professional certificate. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Be familiar with all basic clinical skills for all four species: collecting blood and other specimens, inserting catheters, administering medications, basic anesthetic techniques including intubation and maintenance. Surgical assistance: familiarity with instruments, all aspects of sterile technique, surgical scrubbing (patient and surgeon). Euthanasia procedures. Physical Demands Lift 50 lb. Sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces. Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery. Wear protective clothing including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles, etc. Driving as needed to perform job tasks. Duties & Responsibilities Teaching veterinary students various clinical skills, including basic clinical skills and assisting with teaching more complex skills (35%). Organizing laboratories, ordering supplies, maintaining and caring for laboratory equipment and instruments, regular cleaning and stocking of work areas (30%). Creating and demonstrating clinical skills models; managing and coordinating a professional skills communication class with the Department of Theatre and Film Studies (10%). Assisting with clinical research projects, maintaining accurate records, working with multiple investigators, ordering and maintaining supplies for various research projects (10%). Other tasks as assigned; each technician participates in the completion of a daily chores list (10%). Animal care including daily monitoring of physical health/well‑being, administering treatments, feeding and maintaining living spaces (5%).
