Role Summary and Qualifications

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for coordinating and providing exceptional, patient-focused respiratory care, tailored to the specific needs of the department and aligned with the standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. As an integral member of the patient care team, the Respiratory Therapist conducts various diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures while monitoring patients who are on both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation.

It is essential for the staff respiratory therapist to exhibit proficiency in all aspects of Respiratory Care and other multidisciplinary skills as outlined by training and competency assessments. The Respiratory Therapist will be accountable for fulfilling assigned tasks, ensuring that all care adheres to hospital and respiratory policies. There may also be opportunities to work with Respiratory Students in a clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct and document patient assessments, including breath sounds, airway patency, and cuff pressure, while performing diagnostic procedures to determine the need for and response to respiratory therapy.
• Administer respiratory care therapies, such as oxygen delivery, aerosol medication delivery, and chest physiotherapy.
• Assist in the placement of artificial airways and initiate, monitor, and maintain mechanical ventilation.
• Monitor patients for therapeutic responses, notifying the provider and intervening as necessary in case of adverse reactions.
• Assist in the transportation of patients who are dependent on ventilators.
• Respond to emergency situations, ensuring airway integrity and adequate ventilation during resuscitation as needed.

Qualifications Required:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support certification
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (NBRC-RRT) - must have graduated from an accredited Respiratory Care program
• State Respiratory Therapist/Practitioner (RRT/RCP)
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in Respiratory Care
