Patient Care Associate III - Clinical Translational Research Unit

Position Summary Works under the direction of the Lead Nurse within a research clinic setting, performing study‑related tasks in accordance with research protocols, including obtaining vital signs, conducting EKGs, phlebotomy/specimen collection and processing, and preparing research charts and documentation. The position is four 10‑hour shifts from 10:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Leads the work of others in the clinical operation of a patient care setting; may lead Patient Care Associates I and II and serve as the primary clinic resource in a large multi‑physician clinical practice. Functions as an assistant in the department, prepares and maintains exam rooms, prepares charts, obtains reports and records, directs patient flow, and ensures the overall smooth running of the clinical office. Responsibilities Patient Care Interact directly with patients in a research clinic setting and complete tasks such as obtaining vital signs, performing EKGs, phlebotomy, and verifying medications. Prepare for office hours by obtaining charts, scheduling tests, and preparing exam rooms. Assist with examinations, procedures, and lab tests. May administer medications under the order of a physician or nurse practitioner, including vaccines and IM and subcutaneous injections. Communication and Documentation Direct patient flow, assist with certain procedures and treatments, and complete requisitions. Route phone messages, patient questions, and telephone communications to appropriate personnel. Assist with care coordination by performing tasks outlined in departmental guidelines, such as calling patients with test results, scheduling appointments, assisting physicians with return calls, scheduling surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and admissions, and monitoring new and returned patient contacts. Complete necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner. Answer basic questions from patients or families regarding treatments, diagnoses, and procedures. Equipment and Supplies Monitor supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies, equipment, or garments are available and comply with regulations. Cleans and stocks exam rooms or other areas and sterilizes instruments. Other Functions Maintain required HIPAA compliance, skills and competencies, and participate in in‑services, staff programs, continuing education, and cross‑training programs according to established standards and university policies. Comply with OSHA, state and federal regulatory sources and standards. Participate in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes. Perform other duties as assigned. Education and Qualifications Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent, or combination of education and experience. Basic Life Support certification obtained within one month of hire date. Online BLS certifications without a skills assessment component are not sufficient. Ace certificate in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Patient Care Support experience of 2 years. A driver’s license is not required. Preferred Qualifications Vocational Diploma in Medical Assistant or related trade. Supervisory experience of 1 year. Skills in anatomy, electronic medical records, family support, interactive communication, interpersonal communication, medical terminology, patient support, physician communications, physiology, and telephone operations. No additional certifications or professional licenses required unless stated elsewhere.
