Payroll Tax Specialist

Compensation: $48/hr Availability: Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. This role will last for 5-6 months and will be evaluated from there. Our client is seeking an experienced Payroll Tax Specialist to oversee all aspects of payroll tax compliance for a multi-state and international workforce. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate payroll tax processing, maintaining compliance with ever-changing tax regulations, resolving complex tax issues, and partnering with cross-functional teams to deliver exceptional payroll operations. The ideal candidate is analytical, detail-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced environment where accuracy and compliance are top priorities. Job Duties Manage federal, state, local, and international payroll tax compliance. Process payroll tax filings accurately and ensure all statutory deadlines are met. Maintain payroll tax accounts and oversee tax reporting requirements. Process payroll using ADP Workforce Now (WFN), SmartCompliance, and other payroll systems. Support payroll operations utilizing Workday. Reconcile payroll tax liability accounts and payroll general ledger accounts on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Prepare and review payroll tax reports for accuracy. Ensure year-end tax forms, including W-2s and W-2c corrections, are prepared and distributed accurately and on time. Process retroactive tax adjustments and amended filings when necessary. Research, investigate, and resolve payroll tax discrepancies, agency notices, penalties, and employee tax issues. Support internal, external, and government audits by maintaining thorough documentation. Ensure compliance with changing federal, state, local, and international payroll tax laws. Monitor legislative changes and implement updates to payroll systems and processes. Identify opportunities to improve payroll tax efficiency through automation, technology, and streamlined procedures. Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to payroll tax processes. Partner closely with Payroll, Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, and external vendors to ensure accurate payroll processing and compliance. Serve as a subject matter expert for payroll tax questions across the organization. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field, or an Associate's degree with at least 5 years of payroll tax experience. Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC). Experience with: ADP Workforce Now (WFN) ADP SmartCompliance Workday Strong knowledge of multi-state payroll tax regulations. Experience supporting international payroll tax compliance. Advanced reconciliation, analytical, and problem‑solving skills. Exceptional attention to detail and organizational abilities. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and payroll reporting tools. Experience accurately and timely federal, state, local, and international payroll tax filings. Fully reconciled payroll tax and general ledger accounts in previous roles. Prompt resolution of tax agency notices and compliance issues in the past. Experience completing audit‑ready documentation. Accurate year‑end tax reporting, including W-2s and amended filings historically. Continuous improvements to payroll tax processes, systems, and documentation in past positions.
