Description:
The medical surgical unit consists of 37 beds with a combination of private and semi-private rooms.
The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-6 during day shifts and 1:5-6 during night shifts.
Nurse aides assist with care at a ratio of 1:10-15.
Patients may require telemetry monitoring, which is managed by a central monitor technician.
Common patient diagnoses include COPD, sepsis, CVA, COVID-19, pneumonia, and surgical interventions such as hips, knees, cholecystectomy, hernia repair, and bowel resections.
Charge nurses are available 24/7 and may take patient assignments if necessary.
The unit does not manage ventilated patients, but it does handle BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow patients.
Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services are available 24/7, with a nursing supervisor assisting with medication needs.
Shifts are 12 hours long, with day shifts from 7 AM to 7:30 PM and night shifts from 7 PM to 7:30 AM.
Self-scheduling is available, but management oversees the final schedule.
Floating to another floor may occur, provided competency is demonstrated, and full patient assignments will be maintained when floating.
Floor-specific orientation includes two days in the department and one day of hospital and EMR orientation.
