Patient Financial Services, Cashier

Position Description Under the direction of the Patient Financial Services Cashier Team Lead and/or the Patient Financial Services (PFS) Assistant Director, the PFS Cashier is responsible for the daily preparation, posting, and balancing of payments, adjustments and denials from healthcare third‑party insurance payers and patients to patient claims. Accurately and efficiently enter remittance information provided from insurance carriers and patients. Ensure the integrity of financial transactions within the patient accounting system. Support the organization’s revenue cycle by ensuring timely cash application, maintaining accuracy, and assisting in the reduction of unapplied cash and payment discrepancies. Required Qualifications A minimum of a High School diploma or GED. At least 3 years of prior healthcare billing experience and knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of Word and Excel applications. Ability to adapt to system changes, manage heavy call volume, be a self‑starter, organized, and detail oriented. Preferred Qualifications College degree and/or certifications in billing and coding. Bilingual English/Spanish speaking. Physical Demands Lift stored document boxes up to 10 lbs. Travel May be required to travel to other locations to support operational needs. Additional Requirements Complete a pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Employee Health Services. Complete electronic reference checks with a minimum of three professional references. Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen. Meet regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings. Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s). Workplace Policies Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke‑free environment.
