Position Title Gardener Job Category University Staff Employment Type Regular Job Profile Groundskeeper Description The Gardener is responsible for the maintenance of grounds and landscaping. Responsibilities include planting and maintaining trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, and bulbs; applying herbicides and pesticides; pruning trees and shrubs; supporting overall groundskeeping operations such as snow removal, athletic field maintenance, and litter and trash removal. Overtime work is required for snow removal and special events, including but not limited to the WIAA State Track Meet. Work Schedule Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Overtime may be required for snow removal and special events. Department Grounds Services Compensation $18 per hour Key Job Responsibilities Constructs lawn and landscaping projects including soil grading, seeding, and sodding Installs, propagates, and maintains the health of new and existing plants using a variety of equipment Implements and monitors chemical and fertilizer programs Maintains clean and clear lawns, walkways, roadways, and parking lots, ensuring they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice Identifies and remedies plant diseases and insect damage Required Qualifications Valid driver’s license capable of operating a state vehicle Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Wisconsin Commercial Pesticide Applicator License, Category 3.0 Turf and Landscape within 6 months of hire Ability to grasp, lift, or carry tools and equipment up to 50 pounds regularly Physical ability to work in various positions (arms above head, bending, twisting, crawling, squatting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, scaffolding, ladders, stairs, standing, sitting, walking) while performing job functions Physical endurance to work in environments with extreme temperatures, heat, noise, dust, and heights above 30 feet Ability to wear protective equipment such as respirators, hearing or eye protection Knowledge of safe, efficient operation of heavy equipment Availability to work overtime for snow removal or special events as needed Preferred Qualifications Associate degree or professional certification in a related field Knowledge of preventive maintenance of heavy equipment Ability to identify different varieties of annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs Experience safely operating equipment in areas with high pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle activity Knowledge of essential job functions and ability to safely perform duties with minimal supervision Knowledge or ability to learn software related to preventive maintenance, work order, time reporting, and inventory control programs Effective oral and written communication skills in the English language Education High School Benefits Paid vacation for 12‑month positions Excellent flexible health insurance with low co‑pays and good coverage Paid holidays and paid sick days Vesting in the retirement system after 5 years of employment Benefits are competitive and pro‑rated based on appointment percentage Equal Opportunity Employer UW is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
