PROBATION DEPARTMENT The County of El Dorado, Probation Department is committed to providing public safety through collaborative partnerships and innovative practices in Corrections, with accountability and compassion.

THE OPPORTUNITY Use your skills to perform varied and responsible specialized and confidential legal secretarial duties; compose and prepare correspondence; provides legal administrative support to attorneys, court officers, or law enforcement personnel; assist with calendaring and scheduling; and perform related duties as assigned. The selected candidate will have an opportunity to:

• Perform general and legal secretarial duties related to the assigned functional area and department.
• Draft pleadings, subpoenas, contracts, ordinances, and other legal document correspondence, memoranda, and reports, depending upon the office to which assigned, from notes, brief instruction, dictated tapes, or printed materials.
• Calendar and schedule court dates, meetings, and appointments for attorneys, court officers, and other law enforcement personnel; file or arrange for the filing of legal briefs and other necessary paperwork with the court.
• Process a variety of legal agreements, contracts, etc., following instructions of attorneys, court officers, or other law enforcement personnel.
• Initiate specified correspondence such as transmittal letters for signature by appropriate staff; review finished materials for completeness, accuracy, format, compliance with policies and procedures, and appropriate English usage.
• Collect information from a variety of sources pertinent to area of assignment; compiles data as necessary and prepares routine reports as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE The Legal Secretary position in the El Dorado County Probation Department is a highly organized, detail-oriented professional. They demonstrate exceptional accuracy and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information related to probation cases, court filings, and departmental records. This candidate excels in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities while maintaining thorough attention to detail. They bring experience that will translate well in supporting law enforcement personnel, including preparing legal correspondence, processing court orders, and maintaining case files in accordance with state and local regulations. The ideal candidate communicates clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, and works collaboratively with probation staff and members of the public. They show strong initiative, sound judgment, and a commitment to supporting the mission of the Probation Department through reliable, high-quality administrative and legal support. They are proficient in modern office technology, including case-management systems, electronic filing platforms, and productivity software, and adapt quickly to evolving operational needs. Above all, they embody integrity, professionalism, and a dedication to public service.

Human Resources will assess your application to determine if you are minimally qualified using the following recommendations: Any combination of the required experience, education, and training that would provide the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

• Legal Secretary I: Equivalent to graduation from high school; AND Two (2) years of general secretarial and administrative office support experience.
• Legal Secretary II: Equivalent to graduation from high school; AND One (1) year of legal secretarial experience providing support to attorneys, court officers, or other law enforcement personnel, OR One (1) year of experience equivalent to the County's class of Legal Secretary I.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record.

The County of El Dorado is recruiting applicants for Legal Secretary I/II. This recruitment will establish a list for the purpose of filling current and future limited term, full-time, part-time, and extra help vacancies for at least three (3) months. In accordance with Personnel Rules 1103.1 and 1105.1, an extra help or limited term employee may be transitioned into a regular employee if the department in which the employee works has a vacant allocated position for the same classification as held by the extra help or limited term employee and the appointing authority requests such transfer.
