Position Overview
We are seeking a diligent Associate Attorney to join our insurance defense team. The Associate Attorney will manage a varied caseload of defense matters, support trial preparation, and work closely with partners and claims professionals to provide effective legal representation for our clients. The role emphasizes strong litigation skills, client communication, and practical problem-solving to achieve favorable outcomes while maintaining ethical and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of civil defense matters from intake through resolution, including insurance defense cases.
• Draft and file pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, settlement agreements, and trial briefs.
• Conduct legal research and prepare persuasive memoranda and briefs on substantive and procedural issues.
• Prepare for and attend hearings, depositions, mediations, and trials; assist with witness preparation and trial exhibits.
• Communicate regularly with clients, insurance carriers, adjusters, and outside counsel to provide case updates and strategy recommendations.
• Develop and implement litigation strategies in coordination with partners and senior attorneys; evaluate risk and settlement options.
• Handle all aspects of case discovery, including taking and defending depositions, managing document production, and working with experts.
• Maintain accurate case files, billing records, and timekeeping in accordance with firm and client requirements.
• Collaborate with colleagues to mentor junior attorneys and paralegals, and contribute to practice development and client retention efforts.
• Stay current on changes in civil procedure, insurance law, and relevant case law to apply best practices to client matters.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to the CA Bar in good standing.
• 2+ years of litigation experience, with significant exposure to civil litigation and insurance defense preferred.
• Proven courtroom experience, including motions practice, depositions, and trial participation preferred.
• Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills with the ability to prepare clear, persuasive pleadings and briefs.
• Excellent communication and client-management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines, prioritize tasks, and maintain attention to detail.
• Familiarity with insurance coverage issues, defense strategies, and interaction with carriers and adjusters.
• Proficiency with case management, e-discovery tools, and standard office technology; billing and timekeeping experience a plus.
• Professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to ethical practice and client service.
