In this role, you are responsible for pretesting and processing samples and evaluating and reporting patient results for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease for patients across the age continuum. In addition, you will perform and evaluate quality control to ensure quality patient care and maintain standard laboratory instrumentation and equipment. In this role, you will also assist and perform all duties of the Laboratory Clerk/Assistant. This is a per diem position working variable hours a week on variable shifts. Per Diem positions within the OPEIU CBA require one shift a month and one winter and summer holiday per year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Rotates in the different Laboratory sections, as assigned, performing routine Laboratory testing; these rotations may include a regular weekend rotation and may include alternate shifts. 1. Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Serology, and/or Microbiology. 2. Perform complete, appropriate and accurate documentation in accordance with regulatory and Laboratory environment. 3. Perform Quality Control (QC) and record QC results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) or other Quality Control programs. 4. Report unsatisfactory Quality Control results to the Laboratory QA/QC Technologist, the Laboratory Supervisor or the Laboratory Director. 5. Check that barcode labels do not obscure patient name on specimens and that identities on both labels match. 6. Accurately identify specimen results as they are obtained from instruments and enter, with comments, into the LIS. 7. Assist with the cleanliness of the Clinical Laboratory. 8. Ensure workflow through Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank and/or Microbiology is timely and consistent. 9. Assist in orientation, training and monitoring the work of students, graduate medical technologists, medical technicians and new staff to the Laboratory. 10. Adhere to Laboratory procedure for verification, documentation, and notification of identified critical values to the appropriate provider. 11. Maintain Laboratory equipment and report instrument problems to the appropriate Lead Technologist, the Laboratory Supervisor or the Laboratory Director. 12. Monitor and replenish Laboratory supplies. 13. Use time management and flexibility in organizing and prioritizing workload to provide optimal service to the department and the organization. 14. Performs work in accordance with CLIA/CAP standards. 2. Follows established policy and procedures as directed. 3. Registers patients and performs venipuncture. 4. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 5. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics. 6. Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures as well as labor agreements. 7. Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner consistent with the organization’s values. 8. Acts in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization. 9. Performs other duties as assigned

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The individual in this position reports to the Laboratory Supervisor and the Laboratory Director. This position works closely with patients and other professionals in order to develop and enhance a friendly and cooperative relationship.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

* Education: 1. Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Medical Technology or Laboratory Medicine. * Certification:

1. 1. Nationally recognized certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
2. Must obtain Washington State Medical Assistant Phlebotomist Certification

within three (3) months of hire. 3. CPR certification – HCP (Healthcare Provider) Level of BLS (Basic Life Support) within 30 days of hire * Experience:

1. One year of training in the medical technology field.
2. Three (3) to five (5) years of hospital experience preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Occasional standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. 2. Excessive bending over. 3. Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
