Position Summary The Structural Steel Estimator is responsible for preparing complete and accurate estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects. From reviewing drawings and specifications to coordinating vendor pricing and supporting project handoffs, you’ll play a key role throughout the preconstruction process. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of structural steel systems, fabrication, and erection practices, along with the ability to manage multiple bids while maintaining accuracy and protecting project margins. Key Responsibilities Review structural drawings, specifications, and bid documents to determine project scope. Perform detailed material and labor takeoffs for structural steel fabrication and erection. Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates and bid proposals. Solicit and evaluate pricing from suppliers, subcontractors, and vendors. Coordinate with general contractors, architects, engineers, and project managers during the bidding process. Identify project risks, exclusions, and value engineering opportunities. Maintain historical pricing databases and estimating tools to improve accuracy and efficiency. Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits when required. Assist with contract reviews and post‑award handoffs to project management. Monitor market conditions, material pricing, and labor trends that affect project costs. Support project teams with change orders, scope reviews, and budget analysis throughout construction. Qualifications Minimum 5 years of structural steel estimating experience preferred. Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication, erection, and construction practices. Ability to accurately read and interpret structural drawings, architectural plans, and project specifications. Experience with structural steel estimating and takeoff software (Tekla EPM/PowerFab, Steel Genie, Bluebeam, or similar). Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast‑paced environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Self‑motivated with exceptional attention to detail. Preferred Qualifications Experience estimating civil and vertical structural steel construction and miscellaneous steel projects. Knowledge of connection design, stairs, railings, embeds, and miscellaneous metals. Experience working with fabrication shops and erection contractors.
