Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant - Head/Neck Oncology

Head/Neck Advanced Practice Provider (APP) We are recruiting two full‑time positions for Advanced Practice Providers (DNPs, NPs, PAs) who wish to work in oncology with a sub‑specialty in Head/Neck Medical Oncology. Head/Neck cancers include cancers of the nasopharynx, sinuses, oropharynx (both HPV‑mediated and those from heavy smoking/alcohol use), oral cavity, tongue, salivary glands, and other sites, including skin cancers that metastasize to Head/Neck regions. Caring for head and neck cancer patients is technically complex and emotionally compelling. The APP will develop expertise in general medicine and Head/Neck Medical Oncology. Stanford Health Care supports APPs working at the top of their license/scope, with progression from co‑shared settings with MD colleagues to an independent clinic. The APP will treat patients in independent practice, including previously treated patients under surveillance, newly diagnosed patients, patients on short‑term and long‑term cancer treatment, and those requiring transition to hospice after multiple lines of treatment. Core Responsibilities Provide only the medical services for which the APP is competent, consistent with education, training, and experience, under physician supervision. Consult with a physician when a task, procedure, or diagnostic problem exceeds the APP’s level of competence and refer as appropriate. Evaluate and treat patients with acute or chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns within the specialty, using written standardized procedures. Obtain complete histories and perform physical examinations with assessment of findings on new and return patients. Order and evaluate diagnostic studies as indicated and obtain results. Administer, order, furnish, and prescribe medications per written protocols. Order specimens for laboratory tests, screening procedures, therapeutic procedures, and other services such as PT, OT, RT, radiology, and nursing services. Perform designated procedures after demonstrating competency, as per protocols. Obtain informed consent when indicated. Initiate arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges, complete appropriate paperwork. Enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the IRB and order necessary tests and medications. Assist the supervising physician in the operating room after appropriate training. Recognize age‑specific needs and communicate effectively with patients, families, staff and community members. Identify situations requiring immediate physician attention and initiate life‑saving procedures when necessary. Coordinate inpatient and outpatient care, facilitate collaboration between providers, and coordinate community resources. Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and clinical policies and procedures. Participate in quality improvement initiatives. Provide patient teaching and counseling. Other duties as assigned. Education and Qualifications Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited institution (NPs hired before March12012 are exempt from this requirement). Graduate of an NP program accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). RN state licensure and/or Compact state licensure. Licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP) and NP Furnishing Number (NPF). BLS certification. DEA registration.
