General Maintenance Worker, USC Housing

USC Auxiliary Services, one of the largest divisions at the University of Southern California, focuses on making a difference for over 65,000 students, athletes, faculty, staff, and guests who visit our campuses each day. We are seeking to build a pool of candidates for General Maintenance Worker positions to join our rapidly growing team! Opportunity The General Maintenance Worker will monitor our facilities and ensure that we maintain our high standards of excellence. As an expert in all forms of repairs, you will examine and repair our facilities as needed. You will use your expertise to communicate with management and outside vendors, as well as train other workers. Most of all, your focus on customer service will demonstrate to our students, faculty, and staff that we put their needs first. Accountabilities Provide customer service to students, faculty, staff and external customers, resolving problems and following up to achieve full satisfaction without unnecessary referrals. Conduct ongoing preventative maintenance for appliances including air conditioners, heaters, refrigerators, stoves, ovens and dishwashers. Troubleshoot and repair or replace appliance parts and commercial kitchen equipment such as walk‑in coolers, freezers, ice machines, conveyor belts, slicers, electric ranges, and other needed items. Maintain appliance part inventory. Build interior walls, fabricate cabinets, drawers, and screens, assemble furniture, and repair or replace closet doors, drawers, non‑fire‑rated doors, door locks, closers, hinges, tiles, bathroom fixtures, and other components. Perform preventive maintenance on these items. Install safety restraints on cabinets and furniture, patch and stretch carpet, replace broken windows and ceiling tiles, and perform caulking. Repair or replace light bulbs, ballasts, switches, plugs, light fixtures, and maintain room wiring systems, emergency exit signs, timers, smoke detectors, and emergency lights. Secure electrical wires and repair vacuum cleaners as needed. Prepare walls for painting, patch holes, replace drywall, paint, stain and refinish woodwork such as wall paneling and furniture, and assist in roof repairs and tile replacements where required. Repair or replace plumbing fixtures and hardware such as faucets, shower fixtures, water fountains, garbage disposals, sinks, and toilets. Unclog sluggish or stopped drains, including main drains, and perform minor repairs on water heaters. Perform light welding, light vehicle maintenance, and utility work such as installing or removing posts and signs, patching street holes with asphalt, and repairing gates. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time. Qualifiers Specialized or technical training. 6 to 12 months of experience. What We Prefer Specialized or technical training. 2 to 3 years of experience in appliance repair, plumbing, HVAC, outlet repair, and/or electrical. HVAC certification. Experience supporting a hospitality, restaurant or retail department. Experience troubleshooting and performing basic repairs such as carpentry and painting maintenance. Experience working in a fast‑paced environment and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to train students, temporary, and/or resource workers. Compensation The hourly rate for this position is $25.50. Factors considered include scope and responsibilities, candidate experience, education, training, key skills, internal alignment, contractual requirements, grant funding, and market conditions. Minimum Education: Specialized or technical training. Additional Education Requirements: Combined experience and education may substitute for minimum education. Minimum Experience: Less than 1 year (6–12 months). Minimum Skills: Knowledge of thermodynamic laws, refrigerator cycles, electrical principles, detection instruments, hand and power tools, wood finishing, AC/DC currents, wiring, painting, construction, and plumbing.
