Custodian I

The Custodian I is responsible for supporting the Sevier County Library System by performing routine custodial and cleaning duties at multiple library locations. The primary areas of responsibility include maintaining the cleanliness and general upkeep of library facilities, ensuring adherence to established cleaning schedules, and assisting with basic building maintenance tasks. This position requires strong organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills, as well as knowledge of library operations, custodial procedures, and building maintenance practices. The Custodian I must have the physical ability to perform labor-intensive tasks in various weather conditions and demonstrate reliability in maintaining library facilities. Job performance for this position will be evaluated by the Director of Library Services based on the timeliness and dependability of assigned tasks, adherence to cleaning and maintenance schedules, knowledge of library operations, proficiency in custodial and maintenance practices, and ability to work effectively with staff and the public.

Essential duties include sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping offices, bathrooms, hallways, and common areas on a daily basis; emptying trash cans and removing debris from common areas and library grounds as necessary; dusting and cleaning countertops, windowsills, tables, and other surfaces as needed; cleaning and sanitizing bathroom sinks, commodes, and water fountains daily; vacuuming carpeted rooms and common areas according to established schedules; stocking bathrooms and storage closets with necessary supplies, equipment, and materials; moving furniture and stripping and waxing floors as needed; cleaning windows, mirrors, and walls when necessary; picking up debris and sweeping parking areas and sidewalks as needed; replacing light bulbs and performing other routine maintenance tasks as required; picking up interoffice mail from the main library and branch libraries, sorting it, and placing it in order for distribution; collecting and distributing a variety of supplies and materials required for the efficient operation of the main and branch libraries; delivering books, periodicals, audiotapes, and other materials according to established schedules and upon request; loading and delivering office machinery and related equipment to the main library and branch locations as needed; cleaning up spills and addressing unexpected accidents promptly to maintain a safe environment; assisting library staff with setting up and rearranging furniture or equipment for events and programs; interacting with co-workers, vendors, and the public to provide general assistance; ensuring compliance with safety guidelines and operational procedures related to custodial and maintenance tasks; reporting maintenance issues, supply shortages, or facility concerns to the Library Director for resolution; and performing other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.

Position qualifications include a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) or an equivalent combination of education and experience; possession of or ability to obtain a valid Tennessee driver's license and to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates; and ability to pass a physical and drug screen administered through a licensed physician.
