Traffic Engineering Technician - Engineering G117

Job Title

This position is responsible for performing technical duties in the design, maintenance, and management of city roadways.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct field studies to determine traffic volume, speed, effectiveness of signals, adequacy of lighting, and other factors influencing traffic conditions, under the direction of a traffic engineer.

Investigate, collect, process, and analyze data of traffic and safety inquiries from the public, city officials, and state agencies.

Review traffic control plans in order to issue permits for special events and for utility and construction work that affects the street network, providing assistance with plan preparation or revision as necessary.

Visit development and work (utility/construction) sites in order to determine the project's effect on traffic and the adequacy of plans to control traffic and maintain safety, and to suggest improvements to the TCP.

Interact with the public in order to answer traffic-related questions, respond to Q alerts, or discuss traffic ordinances, plans, policies, and procedures.

Operate counters and record data in order to assess the volume, type, and movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at specific times.

Inspect residential driveways for compliance with plans.

Inspect outdoor café permits for compliance.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Physical Requirements

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts heavy objects and must distinguish between shades of color. The work is typically performed in an office or in the field. Work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee must work in the vicinity of moving traffic. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

• Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
• Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
• Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.

The work is typically performed in an office or in the field. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee must work in the vicinity of moving traffic.
