Work is performed under the supervision of the Crew Leader - Maintainer and Lead Mechanic. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events. The position also involves performance of safety-sensitive functions as defined by 49 CFR Part 655, as amended.Shift: Evening and overnight shift with scheduled days and hours to be determined; may consist of weeknights and weekend nights.There is a $2 per hour shift premium for this position.The Town of Blacksburg is an EEO Employer M/F/D/VEssential FunctionsWashes bus exteriors using automated wash equipmentDetails transit vehicles seasonallyCleans bus interiorsChanges fare box vaultsFuels vehicles in the designated areasChecks and fills fluid levels of transit vehicles as required.Notifies transit mechanics of any issues with fleet vehicles including leaks, new damage, safety concerns, etc.Parks fleet on the lot and in the parking area in an orderly fashionMaintains immediate work area and groundsPerforms minor maintenance and repairs to the automated washerMaintains and orders supplies as neededMaintains records and documents as requiredCleans bodily fluid spills and cleans/treats bloodborne spillsAssists in the training of new staff membersComplies with regulations governing the handling and disposal of hazardous waste and personal protectionGeneral knowledge of the operation and routine cleaning requirements of transit passenger busesGeneral knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing passenger bus operations on public streetsGeneral knowledge of routine maintenance and repair work and of the use of common hand toolsSkill in the safe operation of passenger buses and the automated wash facilityAbility to perform manual laborAbility to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associatesKnowledge, Skills, And AbilitiesGeneral knowledge of the operation and routine cleaning requirements of transit passenger busesGeneral knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing passenger bus operations on public streetsGeneral knowledge of routine maintenance and repair work and of the use of common hand toolsSkill in the safe operation of passenger buses and the automated wash facilityAbility to perform manual laborAbility to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associatesEducation And ExperienceHigh school diploma or GED required1-3 years of experience in the maintenance and operation of large automotive equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experienceSpecial RequirementsValid Driver's License with a satisfactory recordThis is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the Federal Transit Administration and the US Department of Transportation in 49 CFR Part 40, and Part 655, as amendedA pre-employment drug screening is required for this positionDrug and alcohol testing guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration, will be followed during the employment period
