Job Overview Respiratory Care Practitioner at Lurie Children’s Hospital plays a central role in our pediatric care team, delivering high‑quality and compassionate respiratory care for neonatal, pediatric and adolescent patients. Units Supported pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) – 64 single‑bed unit neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) – Level IV, specialist in neurocritical care and severe respiratory issues cardiac care unit (CCU) – 48‑bed, high‑tech unit for young patients with cardiac disease Positions Full‑time, 36‑hour night shift, 7p.m.–7a.m., 12‑hour shifts. Responsibilities Perform respiratory care according to Lurie Children’s policies, procedures and protocols. Assess patients and analyze laboratory and diagnostic data to support patient care plans. Institute, monitor, maintain and troubleshoot respiratory equipment, including mechanical ventilation, high‑frequency ventilation, oxygen delivery devices and aerosol delivery devices. Provide airway care, administer inhaled medications, and perform airway clearance, bronchial hygiene and lung expansion therapy. Initiate, monitor and maintain therapeutic gases such as heliox, nitric oxide, oxygen and nitrogen. Evaluate patient progress through continuous observation and assessment, and recommend revisions to the care plan as needed. Demonstrate competency with protocols for chemical disinfection, high‑level disinfection and sterilization. Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge in respiratory care by reviewing current literature for information and problem‑solving. Communicate with families and multidisciplinary team members to identify health‑care needs. Anticipate and intervene in impending emergent situations effectively. Minimum Qualifications Graduate of a Center on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredited program. Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy (required). Active and in‑good‑standing licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in Illinois. Active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association. Effective communication skills with patients, families, physicians and hospital staff. Critical‑thinking skills, adaptability and acceptance of change. Ability to implement medical plans of care, clinical interventions and procedures as required. Within 90days of hire: Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification from NBRC. Within 1year of hire: PALS/NRP/ACLS certificate. Preferred Qualifications Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NPS) credential from NBRC. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Respiratory Care or a biological science. Previous neonatal and pediatric critical‑care experience. Compensation Pay range: $37.00–$60.50 hourly. Salary reviewed regularly to reflect market conditions. Additional compensation may include hourly differentials, leadership incentives and other incentives for selected roles.
