Job Description JOB SUMMARY The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, sterilization, and proper assembly of surgical instruments and medical equipment used throughout the healthcare facility. This role plays a critical part in infection prevention and patient safety by adhering to established protocols and standards for decontamination, inspection, packaging, and sterilization. Technicians work closely with surgical teams, nursing staff, and other departments to maintain inventory, manage instrument trays, and ensure timely delivery of sterile supplies. Attention to detail, knowledge of sterilization techniques, and commitment to quality control are essential to success in this position. JOB FUNCTIONS Instrument/Equipment Preparation Decontaminates, sterilizes and prepares surgical instruments Decontaminates clinical equipment Distributes surgical instruments and clinical equipment Assures quality instrument set preparation Monitors and re-stocks supplies and equipment Communication Accurately and effectively communicates with Central Sterile Processing (CSP) and Surgical Staff Record-Keeping Monitors and records biological testing of sterilization processes Education & Training Attends required in-services, annual review, and educational programs Regulation Adheres to NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines Complies with applicable Local/State/Federal policies/procedures/guideline/regulations/laws/statues Adheres to all accrediting agencies guidelines (e.g., DNV, OSHA, etc.) Qualifications Education Associate's Degree Graduate of an accredited school of Operating Room Technician or Sterile Processing program (Required) High School Diploma or GED Equivalent with a minimum of 4 years experience in healthcare or hospital setting in addition to any required work experience. Additionally, the required certification must be obtained within one (1) year of hire; possession of this certification at the time of hire will be recognized as equivalent to one (1) year of the required experience (Required) Licenses and Certifications CRCST - Certified and Registered Central Service Technician (Required within 1 year of hire) Work Experience 1-3 years. 1 year of work experience. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must organize and prioritize work assignments. Interacts daily with patients, central sterile processing and O.R. staff and surgeons. Must have good communication skills and reflect a positive caring attitude toward customers and co-workers. Ability to maintain composure in a stressful environment. Must be able to provide information regarding instruments and equipment and sterilization techniques.
