Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction and supervision of a Branch Chief, Supervisor II, Office of Specialized Field Services, and with the guidance and direction of Maintenance Manager I, the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent (CMAS) duties may include but are not limited to: independently performing administrative and functional duties related to Statewide Litter Abatement Program, graffiti and carcass. The position functions as the primary operational point of contact between Headquarters programs and District Maintenance staff, translating statewide goals, policies, and initiatives into practical, field-focused guidance. Incumbent will be assigned to the HQ office. Incumbent must be available for statewide travel up to 40% of the time for various office activities, including but not limited to: providing training, technical assistance and support to the Districts in reviewing/evaluating SPP workplans, litter abatement/graffiti operations, and contract-supported activities to ensure alignment with statewide policy, guidance, safety requirements, and program objectives.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

Position located at 1120 N St Sacramento, Sacramento County.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Special Requirements

• Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.

• Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. Failure to submit a Statement of Qualifications will disqualify candidates from the hiring process. 

Statement of Qualification

Applications are required to submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ). The SOQ is a discussion of how an applicant’s education, training, experie nce, and skills meet the criteria in the duty statement. The statement must respond to the criteria below, must not exceed 2 pages in length, and be typed in Century Gothic, size 11 font. Resumes and cover letters will not take the place of the SOQ. Failure to include and complete the SOQ may result in disqualification for the interview.

SOQ should be on 2 pages, 11-point font and should cover the following areas:

1. Describe your experience in field maintenance, specifically litter abatement and graffiti removal activities.

2. Describe your leadership experience and coordinating and/or planning work activities.

3. Describe your experience delivering training to staff/partners, including providing presentations and conducting training sessions.
