SEIU Healthcare Michigan
Organizer
Solidarity NOW Grant (contract)
Based in Southeast Michigan Grant-Funded Temporary Position (August–December 2026)
SEIU Healthcare Michigan (HCMI) is a dynamic labor union and the largest healthcare worker union in the state, representing over 50,000 long-term care and hospital workers. HCMI members are dedicated to raising standards for healthcare workers and ensuring access to affordable healthcare for all Michiganders.
As part of the two-million-member Service Employees International Union (SEIU), we believe in valuing all workers and respecting all people, fostering thriving communities, and leaving a more equitable world for future generations. We work to build a strong, vibrant, multi-racial, multi-generational labor movement that centers worker power as the vehicle to create good union jobs and healthy communities for all who call Michigan home.
Position Summary
SEIU is seeking a passionate and motivated Organizer: Solidarity NOW Grant (contract) to lead an exciting grant-funded organizing program in Michigan’s Congressional District 10. This temporary position will run from August through December 2026 and will focus on developing member leaders who can build worker power by organizing across race, immigration status, and other differences that are often exploited to divide working people.
The Organizer will recruit, develop, and coach member leaders through political education, leadership development, and community organizing. The Solidarity NOW Grant program helps members understand how anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies are used to weaken worker power and solidarity while equipping them with the skills to organize effective conversations, build relationships, and strengthen collective action.
Working closely with union members, staff, and community allies, the Organizer will help build a sustainable member leadership structure throughout Congressional District 10 that strengthens solidarity and advances worker power.
Program Purpose
Working people are strongest when we stand together. Too often, employers and politicians use race, immigration status, and fear to divide workers, making it harder to win better wages, safe staffing, affordable healthcare, and dignity on the job.
The Solidarity NOW Grant develops member leaders who learn, analyze, and organize around how worker power is weakened when race and immigration status are used to divide working people. With a focus on how immigration is currently being used to create division, the program equips members to recognize these tactics, lead across differences, and build solidarity and collective strength in the face of anti-immigrant rhetoric.
Through leadership development, organizing conversations, and collective action, the program seeks to strengthen worker solidarity, expand member leadership, and build the organizing power needed to create lasting change throughout Congressional District 10.
Essential Responsibilities
- Cultivate new union leaders into the Solidarity NOW program.
- Conduct one-on-one organizing conversations to identify, recruit, and develop member leaders.
- Facilitate leadership trainings, workshops, and political education sessions.
- Coach member leaders as they organize conversations and activities within their workplaces and communities.
- Lead discussions that help members understand how race and immigration have historically been used to divide working people and how solidarity builds worker power.
- Organize meetings, recruit for canvasses, community events, and leadership activities throughout Congressional District 10.
- Build relationships with community organizations and coalition partners that support the goals of the program.
- Maintain accurate organizing records, participation tracking, and program reporting.
- Meet recruitment, leadership development, and engagement goals established by the grant.
- Participate in regular staff meetings, trainings, and planning sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Preferred candidates will possess:
- A demonstrated commitment to worker justice, racial justice, and immigrant justice.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Experience in labor, community, political, or issue organizing is preferred.
- Ability to conduct persuasive one-on-one organizing conversations.
- Experience facilitating meetings, trainings, or workshops is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel throughout Congressional District 10.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic data management systems.
Desired Skills
- Leadership development experience.
- Experience organizing diverse communities.
- Public speaking and facilitation skills.
- Ability to motivate volunteers and develop emerging leaders.
- Bilingual language skills are strongly encouraged.
Working Conditions
- This is a grant-funded temporary position running from August through December 2026. The position requires frequent travel throughout Congressional District 10, regular evening and weekend work, and participation in field organizing activities.
Success Measures
The successful Organizer will:
- Recruit and develop a strong network of member leaders throughout Congressional District 10.
- Increase member participation in leadership development and organizing activities.
- Build sustainable organizing structures within targeted worksites and communities.
- Strengthen solidarity among workers across racial, ethnic, and immigration differences.
- Successfully implement the objectives of the Solidarity NOW Grant and meet established recruitment, leadership development, and engagement benchmarks.
- Help build the long-term worker power necessary to advance justice for working families throughout the district.
Salary: $7,000 – $8,000 a month, depending on experience.
