Maintenance Assistant

Douglas County Community Services is looking for an individual to play a critical role in ensuring that the facilities used by community members are kept in top condition. The Maintenance Assistant performs a variety of duties including basic cleaning, maintenance, and repairs of buildings and equipment that help to keep the Community Center facilities clean, safe, and available for everyday use. This position does not qualify for health benefits, but it is eligible for pro-rated annual and sick leave as well as PERS retirement benefits.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Maintenance Assistant will:

1. Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and polishes floors; sweeps, vacuums and spot cleans carpeted areas.
2. Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; dusts counters, window sills, window blinds and similar fixtures.
3. Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash.
4. Washes doors, windows, walls, ceilings, window blinds and furniture; polishes metalwork.
5. Cleans and disinfects restrooms; restocks restroom supplies as necessary.
6. Cleans lighting fixtures and replaces bulbs/tubes.
7. Performs basic building repair work; may paint facilities and perform graffiti removal; maintains drinking fountains.
8. Secures buildings by closing windows, turning off lights, and locking doors.
9. Reports the need for maintenance or repair of facilities to the appropriate supervisor; corrects or reports any fire or safety hazards and places barriers in public areas.
10. Maintains equipment, materials and supplies in proper condition.
11. Engages in safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition.
12. Answers questions and provides standard information to the public.
13. Maintains records of work performed, time sheets, etc.
14. Maintains inventory of necessary supplies.
15. Prepares and arranges meeting rooms, sound equipment, and furniture.
16. Uses County vehicle to perform various tasks related to job duties.
17. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
18. Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
19. Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.

Minimum Qualifications/Certifications & Licenses

The Maintenance Assistant must have:

• High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of custodial/maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

• Valid Driver's License
• CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
• Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) 10 certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

Working Conditions/Acknowledgements

The Maintenance Assistant will:

• Exert regular force up to 10 pounds, frequent force up to 25 pounds, and occasional force over 100 pounds.
• Regularly stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, reach, push, pull, and repetitive motions; frequently kneel, crawl, sit, and climb or balance.
• Have standard vision requirements; vocal communication and hearing are required.
• Visually inspect small defects, use measuring devices, operate machinery, motor vehicles, and observe surroundings.
• Work in moderately noisy locations.
• Regularly exposed to fumes, bloodborne pathogens, moving parts, toxic chemicals, wet/humid conditions, outdoor weather, extreme cold/heat, electrical shock, vibration, and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining required licenses and certificates, successful background/screening, and providing required documentation for work authorization.
