Responsible for monitoring policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. Assists faculty and staff regarding the interpretation and implementation of health and safety regulations, policies and procedures. Responsibilities Collect, handle, and process hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other regulated waste materials in compliance with all regulatory requirements and internal procedures; communicate with internal customers to coordinate collections, address procedural issues, and report to senior staff. Maintain waste facility cleanliness, conduct inspections, monitor, and test sites; collect environmental samples under direction of senior staff to comply with permits and regulations of storm water, wastewater, SPCC, PST, and other environmental programs. Respond to environmental health and safety issues, complaints, and emergencies including hazardous and non-hazardous spills, odors, contamination, and injuries/exposures; gather information, communicate findings, resolve incidents, and may conduct incident investigations and prepare reports. Maintain accurate records of collection, storage, disposal of hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other regulated waste materials; participate in review and development of standard operating procedures with oversight from senior staff. Perform related functions as assigned; attend staff meetings, safety training, and meetings; use respiratory/personal protective equipment (PPE) as required; carry University cell phone. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Science, Natural Science, Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene, or related field. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Two years of experience in environmental health and safety or a related field. Experience with environmental programs such as hazardous waste management, SPCC, Stormwater, PST, or wastewater. Currently certified Hazardous Waste Operator or attended Hazardous Materials training. Trained to be a Department of Transportation certified shipper for Hazardous Materials. Driving Required Class “C” operator’s driver’s license required. Provide a current three‑year driving record from residence state. Non–Texas residents must obtain a Texas driver’s license within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Salary Range $46,000+ depending on qualifications. Working Conditions Environment Uniforms and personal protection equipment furnished. May work in all weather conditions and extreme temperatures. May work around chemical fumes, standard office conditions, biohazards, chemicals, electrical and mechanical hazards. Physical Tasks Repetitive keyboard use at a workstation. Manual dexterity, climbing stairs and ladders. Lift and move items. Additional Working Conditions Confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Significant walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving heavy materials in all weather. Use of respirator/PPE while performing duties. Exposure to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels. Lifting up to 50 lbs, twisting, grasping, pushing, pulling and bending. On‑call program participation. Work Shift 40 hours a week, Monday‑Friday 8 AM–5 PM; potential for flexible arrangement.
