Job Description
Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) – Department of Pediatrics and Golisano Children’s Hospital, University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). The CAO serves as a bridge between the School of Medicine (SOM) and UMMC, balancing academic priorities with clinical operations to achieve organizational excellence.
Reporting & Leadership
Reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and the Senior Vice President and COO for UMMC. Partners with physician leaders, nursing leadership, and executive teams across the SOM and UMMC to oversee operational performance, uphold financial stewardship, enhance patient and family experiences, and advance a shared strategic vision.
Primary Duties
- Provide business administration and oversight for the Department of Pediatrics, achieving departmental objectives through coordinated functions of faculty and staff.
- Manage and plan clinical operations, including managed‑care contracts; supervise administrative staff; develop and implement the budget; manage grants and contracts; oversee space and materials for teaching, research, and clinical care.
- Resolve significant problems requiring complex analysis across multiple units or the University.
- Strategically manage clinical operations, spearhead growth of divisions and departments, improve systems and client services, oversee productivity and income, and develop reports to monitor faculty productivity and relevant activity.
- Negotiate and optimize managed‑care agreements, coordinate grants and contracts, approve expenditures, analyze variances, and initiate corrective actions.
- Oversee facility space allocation, layout, and planning of expansions or modifications, working with Facilities Management on renovations and upgrades.
- Act as senior authority for Human Resources and Payroll functions, including benefits, compensation, labor relations, and career services for faculty and staff.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies for proposals and awards; negotiate complex agreements; provide contract and grant guidance; and deliver high‑quality service.
- Implement systems that foster a seamless patient/family experience in all settings.
- Partner with SOM and UMMC leadership to achieve excellence in care delivery and initiative outcomes.
- Collaborate with marketing and development teams to enhance visibility, referral networks, and philanthropy for Golisano Children’s Hospital.
- Delegate routine record keeping, reporting, purchasing, and inventory responsibilities.
- Create a cohesive work team that collaborates to achieve unit goals.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, finance, marketing, accounting, human resources, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience: Nine (9) years of administrative and financial operations experience, with at least three (3) years in managed‑care, medical practice, or a related clinical environment.
- Supervisory Experience: Five (5) years of direct supervisory or management experience.
- Certification/Licensure: Clinical Research Associate (CRA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
- Other: Annual financial disclosure required by Maryland State Law; educational or experiential substitutes permissible on a year‑for‑year basis.

Hiring Range
$250,000 - $300,000, commensurate with education and experience.
