Job Overview This is a part‑time position. Primary responsibility is to take excellent care of our customers by satisfying each customer's needs and exceeding their expectations. This requires a defined level of product knowledge, food preparation skills, sales ability, customer relations skills, and cooperation with fellow associates to create an incredible place to work and shop. Responsible for preparing, processing, packaging, and stocking products according to Fresh Foods Standards. Also responsible for providing customer service, cleaning work areas, unloading stock, and reloading salvage products according to Fresh Foods Standards. Customer Service Responsibilities Initiate interaction with customers on the sales floor and sales counter. Ask customers questions regarding their shopping needs. Provide customers with the information needed to meet their taste and meal requirements. Follow through on customer requests or bring the matter to department management or the manager‑on‑duty if you cannot say “yes.” Never be rude to a customer under any circumstance. Make eye contact with and smile at every customer. Speak to customers in a genuine, clear, and enthusiastic manner and ask if they found everything they were looking for. Reflect an appropriate business image to customers and visitors, including appropriate grooming, cleanliness, and dress. Answer telephones politely and professionally; respond to callers on hold in a timely manner. Communicate in English with customers and fellow associates regarding requests, current promotions, and essential products. Provide assistance to fellow associates to complete daily tasks such as unloading trucks, checking deliveries, and restocking. Support and assist fellow associates without complaint and be open to new ideas and opportunities. Product Preparation and Handling Neatly decorate cakes and other bakery items and create party trays according to standards and customer specifications. Obtain or prepare food items requested by customers at counter. Bake, fry, broil, or roast poultry, pork, beef, and other meats according to standards. Prepare, weight, price, date, wrap, and package products according to standards. Operate all necessary equipment to effectively prepare and portion products according to standards and customer specifications. Ensure that all appropriate Fresh Foods products are properly refrigerated and check temperatures of product, cases, and coolers according to standards. Sell only fresh products and follow Harris Teeter standards regarding product preparation, merchandising, rotation, dating, and markdowns. Store Operations Keep shelves properly stocked by blocking product according to standards to maximize sales and minimize shrink; work backstock on a regular basis. Process close‑dated and damaged product according to standards. Check merchandising displays regularly to ensure the availability of advertised items and/or samples; prepare, display, and offer daily samples according to standards. Inform management of the lack of advertised items, incorrect prices, missing signs, departmental changes, or other situations as appropriate. Unload product from truck and place in coolers according to Fresh Foods Receiving and Rotation standards; load salvage on truck as required. Keep the store clean by complying with Health Department and Department of Agriculture standards, sanitation standards, and procedures; clean and sanitize prep rooms, coolers, counters, windows, floors, and garbage areas. Perform fixed activities such as sweeping, cleaning, blocking, straightening, and emptying trash when business is light. Assist in the inventory and price change processes and maintain proper records. Communication and Support Communicate in English with customers and associates regarding requests, promotions, and essential products. Carry out calls by greeting with the store name and offering assistance. Respond to people on hold promptly and provide requested information. Write orders and other necessary documentation. Safety and Cleanliness Follow all safety regulations and help keep the store free of dangerous situations. Immediately inform store management of all accidents or safety hazards and record them in the designated log. Ensure proper handling, mixing, and application of chemicals in compliance with the Hazard Communication Program Manual. Follow all internal safety and security procedures when operating equipment and storing chemicals. Qualifications Personal Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills, willingness to complete required training, and ability to work with the team to increase customer satisfaction and sales. Education: High‑school diploma or GED; or one to three months of relevant experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills: Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English; effectively present information to customers and associates who only speak English. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers using units of American money and weight measurement. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions and to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Completion of company training including new‑hire orientation, food sanitation, customer service network, safety, food safety, and product knowledge. Age: Must be at least 18 years of age. Physical Demands Requirements include standing, walking, reaching, lifting and moving up to 30 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. The job requires close vision, color, and depth perception. Work Environment The store is a moderate environment with occasional hot, cool, and extreme cold exposure, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Compensation Pay: $15.25/hour to $22.00/hour for newly hired associates, adjusted for experience and skill level.
