Job Title: Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist / Maritime Safety Inspector 

Location: San Diego, CA (Shipyard & Naval Base Operations) 

Position Type: Full-Time / On-Site 

Position Overview We are seeking an experienced EHS Specialist / Maritime Safety Inspector to lead workplace safety, environmental compliance, and risk mitigation across heavy industrial and maritime shipyard environments. Operating on-site across commercial shipyards and U.S. Naval installations, the ideal candidate will execute daily safety walks, monitor high-risk trade activities, deliver safety training, and ensure full adherence to OSHA, EPA, and NAVSEA requirements. 

Key Responsibilities

• Site Inspections & Oversight: Conduct daily safety walks, hazard analyses, and audits across active vessel work sites, shipyards, and warehouse facilities. 
• High-Risk Operations Monitoring: Oversee critical safety operations, including gas-free confined spaces, fall protection, electrical safety, crane operations, and hazardous material handling. 
• Compliance & Program Administration: Maintain adherence to OSHA (Maritime & Construction), EPA, NAVSEA Standard Items, and local environmental health regulations. Pass internal and external compliance audits. 
• Training & Onboarding: Design and deliver toolbox talks, safety orientations, and specialized training programs (e.g., hazmat handling, emergency response, equipment safety) to tradesmen, contractors, and staff. 
• Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis: Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, and near-misses; identify root causes and implement corrective actions to drive down incident rates. 
• Environmental & Hazmat Management: Oversee hazardous waste management (RCRA/DOT), maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and support environmental sustainability and compliance reporting. 
• Subcontractor Oversight: Audit contractor and vendor performance on-site to ensure compliance with facility safety standards and federal badging/base access requirements. 

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Experience: 3+ years of progressive EHS experience in maritime, shipyard, heavy industrial, or defense contractor environments. 
• Education: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Management, or related field preferred. 
• Certifications (Preferred or Required):
  • OSHA 10-Hour Maritime / OSHA 30-Hour Construction 
  • OSHA 5410 (Maritime Standards) 
  • Shipyard Competent Person (Gas-Free Testing) 
  • HAZWOPER (40-Hour / RCRA / DOT Hazardous Materials) 
  • CPR / First Aid Certified 
  • Qualified Rigger / Signal Person / Crane Safety Awareness 
• Security & Access: Ability to clear background checks and obtain DBIDS / U.S. Naval Base access passes. 

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong familiarity with NAVSEA Standard Items, OSHA 29 CFR 1915 (Shipyard Employment), and EPA hazardous waste regulations. 
• Hands-on ability to operate autonomous field inspections (80%+ time spent in active operational environments). 
• Excellent communication skills for delivering crew safety briefings and collaborating with site leadership, Navy personnel, and subcontractors.
