BEHAVIOR TECHNICIAN / INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE 2026-27 JobID: 1787 Job Summary: The Behavior Technician / Instructional Aide will provide direct behavioral and instructional support to students with special needs. This role involves implementing behavior intervention plans, collecting data, and assisting with academic instruction and classroom management. The Behavior Technician / Instructional Aide will collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other school staff to support students' learning, social, and emotional development. Key Responsibilities Assist in the preparation and delivery of the educational program for students with moderate to severe disabilities under the direct supervision of the special education teacher, general education teacher and related service personnel. Support students within the special education setting and the general education setting. Maintain confidentiality regarding work with students. Demonstrate an ability to lift and position students (30-90 pounds or greater) with proper equipment and training. Ability to make minor decisions in accordance with established procedures of the classroom. Assist in the implementation of behavior management and sensory systems as established by the program and teacher. Participate in team meetings. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, and serve as a role model for all students in the building. Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff in the building. Provide ongoing care for classroom equipment and materials. Demonstrate cooperation to a team approach in working with a variety of staff members including other associates, related service staff and teachers. Collect data and facilitate accommodations and modifications as directed by the teacher. Provide personal care to students including but not limited to: toileting assistance, changing of student's clothes, and lunch preparation/ feeding administration as directed by the teacher or nursing personnel. Behavioral Support Implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as designed by the BCBA or IEP team. Utilize applied behavior analysis (ABA) techniques to teach new skills and manage challenging behaviors. Collect, record, and maintain accurate data on student progress toward behavioral goals. Support students in developing social skills, self-regulation, and other functional life skills. Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies as needed. Instructional Support Assist in the implementation of instructional strategies aligned with students' individualized education plans (IEPs). Work one-on-one or in small groups with students to support functional/academic tasks and skill-building activities, including activities of daily living and independence. Modify and adapt instructional materials under the direction of the classroom teacher to meet students' diverse learning needs. Monitor students' progress in academic and behavioral areas, providing feedback to the teacher and educational team. Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages engagement and participation from all students. Classroom Management Assist with daily classroom routines, organization, and transitions to ensure a smooth learning environment. Support the teacher in managing behavior in the classroom, following the school's behavioral policies and procedures. Provide supervision during non-instructional times such as lunch, recess, and transportation, ensuring student safety and adherence to behavioral expectations. Participate in team meetings to discuss student progress, share data, and collaborate on effective interventions. Maintain open communication with teachers, parents, and support staff to ensure consistency in behavior management and instructional practices. Assist in creating visual supports, social stories, and other instructional tools to aid student learning and behavioral success. Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent (Required); Associate or Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, or related field (Preferred). Certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). (Preferred/Can be Inactive) Illinois Paraprofessional License (Required - D103 will assist with this process) Experience working with children or adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other special needs in a school or clinical setting. Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations. Ability to collect and manage data efficiently. Physical Demands Ability to lift and support students with mobility issues or assist during physical interventions, if necessary. Capacity to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods during the school day. The role is primarily based in a classroom setting, but may involve working in other areas of the school, including playgrounds, cafeterias, therapy rooms and in the community for Community Based Instruction (CBI).
