Police Officer (Lateral or Academy Graduate Only) City of San Rafael, CA; 1400 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael, California 94901 Position Details Police Officer – Lateral or Academy Graduate Only Salary: $8,071 – $10,301 per month (DOE/DOQ), plus excellent benefits. Lateral hire incentive up to $25,000 (see SRPA MOU pages 50-52). Pay incentives include shift differential 3‑5%, P.O.S.T. Certificate Pay (3% Intermediate, 5% Advanced), bilingual pay 2.5‑10%, and specialty pays for Detective, Motor Officer, FTO, SDAT/Firearms Instructor, SWAT, HNT, MAIT, and CSI. Benefits include retirement through MCERA, health insurance cafeteria plan, dental & vision coverage, deferred compensation, and annual leave of 10‑25 days (based on service), 12 days sick leave, and 13 holidays. Essential Duties Patrol assigned areas by radio car, motorcycle, or foot to observe and report suspicious activities or hazardous conditions; arrest law violators as required. Respond to routine and emergency calls to protect life and property and enforce applicable laws, codes and ordinances. Investigate crimes, accidents, deaths and disturbances; collect, preserve and present evidence, interview victims, witnesses and suspects, and complete investigative reports. Direct traffic, regulate vehicle flow, issue citations or warnings as appropriate. Apart in court to present evidence and testimony; serve writs, warrants, subpoenas and other legal documents. Provide information and direction to the public; assist community policing, maintain public relations, make public service appearances. Provide emergency first aid and/or assistance; request additional EMS as needed. Search, guard, transport, and assist in booking and custodial care of prisoners. Handle missing person cases; take custody of runaway or delinquent juveniles; investigate child welfare cases. Assist with emergency or planned events such as natural disasters, fires, parades, crowd control; participate in special details and assignments. Direct, instruct, and supervise officers in training; conduct in‑service briefings. Eligibility & Requirements Knowledge of: modern police methods, statutory and case laws, city and department policies, local geography and community concerns, community‑oriented policing, information technology and related software applications. Abilities: think and act quickly in emergencies; understand written and verbal directions; interpret and explain laws, rules and regulations; operate public safety equipment including computers; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with public and employees. Education and Experience Must possess a California P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certificate. Completed Post Basic Academy and, if separated from employment for >3 years, must repeat training. High school graduate or equivalent. 45 semester (or equivalent quarter) units from an accredited college/university preferred. Bilingual skills preferred. Physical Demands Required to stand, walk, lift up to 10 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally; also sit, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; require close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
