Research Laboratory Technician

Schedule Monday - Friday 3pm - 7pm and Saturday 9am - 5:30pm. Location: Singing River Ocean Springs Hospital. Position Overview Medical Laboratory Technician, Intern is a student who works in laboratory departments completed a clinical rotation at a SRHS laboratory. The MLT, Intern evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing, performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory according to established laboratory protocol and procedures, verifies accuracy before reporting, reports test results promptly, performs maintenance and calibration on instruments and equipment, troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur, and complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety procedures, and exposure control plans for blood-borne and airborne pathogens. Responsibilities Evaluate specimens for acceptability and perform testing according to laboratory protocol. Verify accuracy before reporting and report test results promptly. Perform maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of instruments, equipment, reagents, and specimens. Comply with universal precautions, safety procedures and exposure control plans for blood-borne and airborne pathogens. Conduct phlebotomy procedures such as venipunctures, finger sticks and bleeding times as appropriate. Ensure all duties are performed per Singing River Health System procedures, policies, accreditation organization and governing guidance. Qualifications Currently enrolled in a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Associate Degree program with a B or better average. Must obtain certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology or comparable agency upon completion of the MLT or CLS program. Must complete de-escalation training within 90 days of orientation. License: N/A. Experience and Training Training and experience meeting the requirements of the clinical laboratory rotation for the educational degree being obtained. Reporting Structure Reports to: Director of Laboratory / Supervisor / MTs / MLTs. Supervises: N/A. Physical Demands Work is moderately active, involves sitting with frequent movements within the facility, and traveling to another facility within the SRHS service area. Requires minimal force to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects including the human body. Requires repetitive wrist, hand or finger motions when using standard office equipment. Requires close visual acuity and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to be active for extended periods. Requires willingness to work assigned schedules with potential changes for off days, shifts or weekends.
