Assistant General Counsel

Assistant General Counsel, West Region Based in Los Angeles or San Francisco, the Assistant General Counsel will serve as a pivotal legal contact for California regional operations, supporting all legal and compliance matters affecting the area. The role reports directly to Suffolk’s Regional General Counsel and works daily with the West Region operations team, leadership, and legal teams. Responsibilities Provide advice to leadership and operational staff on contracts, claims, litigation, compliance and other legal matters. Lead or assist in the negotiation and drafting of complex construction agreements of varying types, including owner contracts, subcontracts, and vendor agreements. Proactively work with project teams to properly administer contracts, identify risk, and implement risk mitigation plans while empowering the business to succeed. Respond to legal inquiries within the company and issue sound, comprehensive legal advice to all internal clients and stakeholders across the business (operations, human resources, finance, accounting, marketing, etc.). Manage outside counsel across relevant subject matter, including budgets and strategy. Conduct live training for large groups on legal and compliance related topics, including construction contract and compliance issues relevant to publicly and privately funded projects. Draft letters related to contract administration and other issues for project teams to send to subcontractors, clients, and other third parties. Work closely with senior leadership in Operations and Legal to resolve claims with third parties. Regularly (several times monthly) visit project sites in the region to collaborate with project teams. Perform other duties as assigned by the company leadership. Qualifications At least 5–8 years of experience in complex construction law, either in a corporate legal department or a full‑service law firm, with direct experience managing vertical construction matters. Bachelor’s degree from a 4‑year college or university and a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. Excellent academic credentials. California bar admission. Compensation Information Expected salary range: $175,000 – $246,000 USD in Los Angeles. This range is subject to factors including skill set, experience, education, and other qualifications.
