POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Chancellor of the university, the Chief of Staff (COS) will support the operations of the Chancellor's office. The incumbent will also serve as a strategic partner/liaison to the President. The COS will sit on the Chancellor's Executive Leadership Team (CELT) and will partner with various campus bodies/constituents to advance strategic priorities and special projects. Special projects including but not limited to matters involving University officials and community leaders. It is anticipated that the COS, like other members of the CELT will interact regularly with the Board of Supervisors. This person must be strategic, analytical, process oriented and committed to excellence in advancing the vision of the Chancellor.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serves a key role serves in the process of strategic planning and problem resolution with matters affecting major segments of the university. Ensures matters requiring the attention of the CELT are thoroughly developed, researched and evaluated.
- Acts as key advisor to the Chancellor, the incumbent in this position will help operationalize the Chancellor's priorities into plans of action.
- Creates and maintains a plan to cascade communications when representing the Chancellor on projects and in meetings; keeps the Chancellor informed.
- On behalf of the Chancellor the COS will support the works of the SUS President and Board of Supervisors. Working to advance projects and other strategic work of the SUS and BOS.
- Serves as the primary liaison for the Chancellor with university officials and community leaders on strategic and operational matters pertaining to the specific area of institutional interest. Supports the Chancellor with issues related to faculty, staff, students and public affairs.
- Manages high priority projects and programs designed to support institutional goals and achieve the university's mission. Aids in keeping the strategic vision across multiple divisions; ensures that constituent representatives are kept appropriately informed of project activities.
- Represents the university and coordinates communication with key community and advocacy groups, including external agencies and/or other interested parties. Assists with high competence as a skillful written and verbal communicator, preparing reports and other communications on behalf of the Chancellor.
- Engages with the Government Relations office regularly, giving status of all government contacts events and programs as directed by the Chancellor.
- Anticipates, identifies and troubleshoots issues of concern or significance; provides timely information and necessary updates across multiple stakeholders; responds to inquires as delegated by the President.
- Partners with the financial administration to develop business plans related to a wide range of projects; may chair and lead committees. Includes some responsibilities for budget development and management.
- Provide leadership in the areas of marketing, advancement and workforce & community development.
- May oversee the direct or indirect supervision of assigned personnel within the Office of the Chancellor. Uses judgement and discretion to ensure that all divisions are aligned with the university's policies, goals and mission.
- Performs additional job-related duties as assigned or as the need becomes evident.
- Doctoral degree plus demonstrated knowledge, competence and 5 or more years' experience in areas such as higher education; strategic planning; project management & operational effectiveness
- Firm working knowledge of theories, concepts and practices and the ability to use them in complex, difficult or unprecedented situations.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work individually and in a team environment. Must also be able work with diverse groups in a collaborative manner.
- Excellent organizational, communication, time management, problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet, Banner software (or the ability to learn Banner).
