Part-Time Custodian - Middle School

Summary This position is responsible for providing an atmosphere that is conducive to the learning situation, maintain high standards of cleanliness, and do preventive maintenance on items of equipment. Duties Keeps a careful watch over the building and grounds for any situation that could lead to injury or harm to students, staff or the general public. On a daily basis during the normal workweek, checks all rooms, windows, and doors for safety concerns and dust/polish appropriate furniture, files, bookcases, and windowsills. Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and always play areas neat and clean. Helps to remove snow where appropriate and spread snow melting chemicals. Keeps the building clean and attractive in appearance by performing daily, routine sweeping of floors, vacuuming of any carpeted areas, mopping of restrooms, and cleaning and disinfecting restroom fixtures, water fountains and high contact areas. Dusts mop the gym floor, stage, and bleachers. Empties and removes garbage from the building and recycling containers and complies with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of any waste including hazardous waste. Washes windows both inside and outside as frequently as necessary, weather permitting. Cleans classroom boards on a regular basis in accordance with proper maintenance procedures for each type of marking surface. Keeps the principal and the Director of Buildings and Grounds aware of all needed repairs. Performs emergency repairs and/or cleaning services as needed. Reports damage to school property immediately. Removes graffiti as soon as detected. Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the school building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, checking electrical appliance use, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open, and all panic bolts are working properly. Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly stock facilities. Requisition of supplies and equipment needed for cleaning. Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures. Distributes supplies and equipment (e.g. fill soap dispensers, towel/toilet paper dispensers, etc.). Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water and electricity. Moves, arranges, and sets up furniture and equipment as needed and as directed by the Director of Buildings and Grounds. Completes employer required training for the purpose of maintaining current knowledge regarding specific job and/or district, state and federal rules, regulations, policies and procedures and laws. Remains on the school premises during school hours, unless excused by Director of Buildings and Grounds, within reason, during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required. Reports to work on time and maintains a good personal record of attendance. Follows Board policy at all times, assists other personnel as may be required, and performs any other related duties as assigned by the administration. Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent required. Knowledge of basic cleaning, repair and maintenance of a school building. Ability to complete appointed tasks without the need for constant supervision. Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions. Ability to be on your feet for long periods of time. Enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner. Able to work cooperatively and pleasantly with peers, supervisors, parents, and children. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Ability to push and pull up to 40 lbs. Other qualifications as determined as necessary by the school board. Scheduling Hours, terms and conditions of employment shall be established at the time of employment or reemployment.
