Naval Science Instructor (NSI) Department: Calvert County Public School District Location: TBD, Prince Frederick, Maryland Job ID: 5723242 Application Deadline: Open until filled Posted: May 19, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: To be determined Job Summary The NSI assists the Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) in managing and implementing the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Core (NJROTC) unit program in accordance with national, state, and district standards. The role involves curriculum delivery, co‑curricular activities, student counseling, and program administration to promote cadets' intellectual, social, patriotic, character, and physical growth. Education, Certification and Experience At the time of application the candidate must hold or be eligible for: Naval Science Instructor (NSI) certification from the Department of the Navy. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication. Ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, and community members. Understanding and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse cultural, ethnic, and racial groups. Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks analogous to the responsibilities listed below. Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties Comply with state, federal regulations and Calvert County Public Schools policies. Prepare and update lesson plans and deliver instruction of the four‑year Naval Science curriculum. Instruct in military drill. Counsel students about the NJROTC program. Ensure NJROTC cadets conduct themselves in a military manner under naval supervision. Maintain chain of command protocols with cadets. Establish positive rapport with students, staff, parents, and community members. Assess unit progress to meet program objectives. Requisition government‑furnished equipment (uniforms, training aids, books, drill and air rifles, organizational equipment). Arrange cleaning and tailoring of uniforms. Control inventory of all government‑furnished equipment and materials. Perform simple preventative maintenance of training aids and devices. Ensure physical security of all government‑furnished equipment and materials. Plan extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit, including color and honor guard ceremonies, drill and rifle team meets, field trips, leadership training camps, and ship cruises. Accompany the unit to weekend competitions and be available for evening events. Prepare periodic reports on program administration and logistics. Keep current with developments and organizations within the Navy. Attend Navy‑sponsored training and professional development opportunities. Make annual presentations about the NJROTC program to recruit new cadets. Inform students, parents, and community members of NJROTC activities through school publications and local media. Serve on routine committees or extracurricular duties rotated among faculty. Ensure safety and well‑being of cadets during all activities. Apply non‑discriminatory practices and take corrective action when necessary. Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and come to work promptly. Work under stress and meet all deadlines. Other Job Duties Perform additional duties as required or assigned by the School Principal or designee. Physical and Psychological Conditions/Demands Position requires significant periods of standing and walking in a typical school environment. Unusual Demands May be subject to a flexible work schedule. Terms of Employment Twelve (12) month position with salary determined by the Department of the Navy. An annual stipend is included for work beyond the normal school day. Employees are encouraged to use automatic payroll deposit.
