Contract Staff Software Engineer - Performance Graphics (C++,Rust, WebGL) [Remote]

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Contract Staff Software Engineer - Performance Graphics (C++, Rust, WebGL) based in the United States.

This role focuses on the ongoing engineering and maintenance of a large-scale browser graphics stack covering rendering, compositing, images, canvas, and WebGL.
You will help keep complex graphics systems healthy by resolving bugs, regressions, incoming issues, and test-related challenges.
The position requires diagnosing graphics problems across multiple operating systems and hardware environments.
You will work within a mature, multithreaded codebase where strong debugging, optimization, and technical judgment are essential.
Your contributions will help reduce technical backlog and regressions while improving the reliability of the graphics area.
You will also participate in code reviews and routine engineering work, allowing senior engineers to dedicate more time to performance-focused initiatives.
This is a remote contract opportunity suited to an independent engineer who can take technical ownership in a complex open-source software environment.

Accountabilities:

• Own day-to-day maintenance of the graphics codebase, including bug fixes, regression resolution, test maintenance, and incoming technical issues.
• Diagnose and resolve graphics-related problems across multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.
• Investigate complex issues involving rendering, compositing, images, canvas, WebGL, and related graphics components.
• Perform routine code maintenance and participate in code reviews to maintain code quality and long-term system health.
• Identify and address sources of regressions and technical backlog to improve the stability and reliability of the graphics area.
• Collaborate with engineers working across the graphics stack to resolve issues efficiently and maintain development momentum.
• Apply strong debugging and optimization techniques within a large, multithreaded codebase.
• Work independently on technically complex problems while providing technical leadership and sound engineering judgment.
• Contribute to a healthy graphics engineering environment that enables senior team members to focus on performance optimization and strategic improvements.

Requirements

• Strong professional experience with C++ and/or Rust .
• Solid understanding of graphics frameworks and GPU architecture.
• Strong debugging and optimization skills, particularly within multithreaded software systems.
• Experience working effectively within large, mature, and complex codebases.
• Ability to independently investigate technical issues, identify root causes, and implement reliable solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to take technical ownership and provide engineering leadership when addressing complex problems.
• Strong code review and software maintenance skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively within distributed and open-source-oriented engineering environments.
• Knowledge of shader languages is preferred.
• Experience with mobile platforms, particularly Android, is an advantage.
• Previous experience contributing to open-source projects is preferred.

• Canada Tier 1 compensation range: CAD $145,800–$186,172.
• Canada Tier 2 compensation range: CAD $131,400–$154,600.
