Special Education Teacher

Under general supervision, special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. Develops or modifies curricular and prepares lessons and other instructional material to student ability levels. Works in self-contained, team, departmental or itinerant capacity as assigned. Reports to the Director of Special Education.

Essential duties and responsibilities include developing and implementing lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the District's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles. Presents subject matter according to guidelines established by Clarendon School District Two, board policies, and administrative regulations. Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. Conducts assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities. Works cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP). Works with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements. Plans and supervises assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s). Uses technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process. Helps students analyze and improve study methods and habits. Collaborates with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD process for each student assigned. Conducts ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing. Assumes responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsors outside activities approved by the campus principal. Be a positive role model for students, supports mission of school district. Implement an instructional, therapeutic or skill development program to for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan for instructional activities. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.

Minimum training and experience includes a bachelor's degree in education from an accredited university. Must possess a valid teaching certificate with required endorsements. Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned. At least one-year student teaching or approved internship.
