Description:
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties.
This includes the execution of physician orders and operating pill call.
The nurse will operate sick call and assist the physician in examinations and treatments.
Technical/clinical procedures will be performed within the scope of the license.
The nurse will assist in the professional management of the medical department.
Appropriate nursing skills will be applied in the care and treatment of inmates/residents.
Attendance at sick call with the physician to examine inmates/residents is required.
Preparation of a list of inmates/residents to be examined is necessary.
The examining room and equipment must be prepared.
Medication dispensing and documentation must follow applicable policies and procedures.
Control of medication, syringes, and other medical supplies is required.
Emergency procedures will be performed as needed.
The work area and equipment must be kept clean, utilizing appropriate sanitation methods.
Documentation and reporting activities must comply with established policies and procedures.
The nurse will assist supervisors in evaluating medical services to prevent duplication.
Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained.
Observation and recording of inmate/resident behavior is essential.
The medical unit must be inspected for contraband items, which should be securely stored or disposed of.
Preparation and maintenance of various records, reports, and logs is required.
Reading, comprehending, and interpreting documents including medical instructions is necessary.
Response to lawsuits through corporate counsel and attendance at court hearings may be required.
Research of charts and review of inmates/residents with serious health problems will be conducted.
Effective communication with administration, staff, and residents is essential.
Evaluation and recommendation of safety requirements for a safe working environment must be facilitated.
Preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports as needed is required.
Escorting inmates/residents for medical treatment is part of the duties.
Initiating and completing investigations and inquiries while exercising independent judgment is necessary.
Engagement in functions in confined areas includes working rotating shifts.
Awareness of potential verbal abuse from inmates/residents is important.
