2026 SMASH Academy - Design Thinking Workshop Facilitator (Berkeley)

Position Description Reporting to the Program Director, the Design Thinking Workshop Facilitator plays an integral role in delivering and sustaining the transformative learning experience that SMASH Scholars need to pursue, persist, and succeed in STEM. The facilitator co‑facilitates with two other facilitators, guiding a group of 35–45 scholars through project‑based learning, technology use, and workforce readiness for a 3‑week summer assignment scheduled from 7/13/2026 to 7/24/2026 with additional virtual training before and after. Key Responsibilities Attend required training sessions and staff meetings. Adhere to the curriculum structure provided by SMASH. Facilitate Design Thinking Workshop sessions: 2.5‑hour sessions, five days per week. Alternate between whole‑group, small‑group, and individual facilitation. Facilitate learning through inquiry, preparing adequately by reviewing material. Take attendance and communicate absences with the Program Director or Coordinator. Ensure technical logistics are in order during virtual sessions. Coordinate with co‑facilitators for smooth lesson delivery. Guide conversations to ensure all voices are heard and outcomes are met for the day and the summer program. Continuously assess scholar learning, provide feedback, and pivot as needed. Communicate and reflect with co‑facilitators to ensure activities are aligned and outcomes are achieved. Log student achievement data on a weekly basis. Attend weekly staff meetings (1 hr per week) and the staff closeout. Ensure completion of deliverables such as pre‑ and post‑assessment scores, attendance records, staff surveys, and final inventory. Knowledge of 21st‑century skills. Effectiveness working with low‑income, first‑generation college youth of color in diverse fields. Desire to teach with technology and improve technological skills as needed. Willingness to be self‑reflective and reflexive about your teaching philosophy. Excellent management skills with openness to various pedagogical and facilitation approaches. Flexibility for training dates and event dates. Virtual learning experience is a plus. Compensation This is a non‑exempt position. The hourly compensation is estimated to be $30.00. Compensation may be adjusted proportionally for missed hours or early completion of the assignment. Pay will vary per pay period based on part‑time and full‑time program phases and is subject to variation based on specific circumstances.
