Sterile Pharmacy Technician

Location: The Woodlands TX
Employment Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday- Friday 9:00-5:30 weekend requirements if applicable
Department: Pharmacy
Reports To: Pharmacy Manager / Director of Pharmacy/Quality Supervisor

Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Sterile Pharmacy Technician to join our pharmacy team. The Sterile Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing sterile compounded medications in accordance with established procedures, regulatory requirements, and patient safety standards.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to maintaining a clean, controlled, and compliant sterile compounding environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare sterile compounded medications accurately and efficiently under the supervision of a pharmacist.
• Perform aseptic manipulations using appropriate sterile compounding techniques.
• Work within cleanroom and controlled-environment requirements, including appropriate gowning and hygiene procedures.
• Accurately measure, calculate, compound, label, and package medications according to approved procedures.
• Verify medication ingredients, concentrations, expiration dates, lot numbers, and quantities before compounding.
• Maintain accurate compounding records and required documentation.
• Perform required cleaning, disinfection, and maintenance of sterile compounding areas and equipment.
• Monitor and document environmental and equipment conditions as required.
• Follow applicable pharmacy policies, USP standards, state regulations, and organizational procedures.
• Identify and report discrepancies, quality concerns, medication errors, or potential safety issues promptly.
• Maintain adequate inventory of medications, supplies, and sterile compounding materials.
• Assist with inventory management, expiration-date checks, and medication storage.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational privacy requirements.
• Participate in quality assurance and continuous-improvement activities.
• Perform other pharmacy-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Pharmacy technician registration or licensure as required by the state of Texas.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures precisely.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
• Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.

Preferred:

• Previous experience in sterile compounding or an inpatient/hospital pharmacy.
• National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
• Experience working in a USP <797> and/or USP <800>-compliant sterile compounding environment.
• Experience with pharmacy automation or electronic medication-management systems.
• Completion of an accredited sterile compounding training program.

Physical & Work Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to perform repetitive hand and fine-motor tasks.
• Ability to lift and move pharmacy supplies and equipment as required.
• Ability to work in a controlled cleanroom environment while wearing required personal protective equipment.
• Ability to maintain concentration and accuracy while performing repetitive or time-sensitive tasks.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities

Work Environment

This position requires standing and walking to storage shelves and filling counters to fill prescriptions and wearing PPE frequently during the day.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The ability to see distinctions in colors and shapes is also required. The strength to lift up to 35 pounds.  This position is moderately active and requires standing and walking for the duration of the shift. The employee must be comfortable wearing PPE including gowns, masks to cover nose and mouth, protective eyewear and gloves.

Expected Hours of Work

Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm

Travel

No travel is expected for this position. There may be opportunities for travel to educational functions.

Required Education and Experience

1. High school diploma or equivalent

2. One year of Sterile compounding experience preferred.

  Additional Eligibility Qualifications

1.    Certificate from pharmacy technical training program, junior college graduate or State certification as Pharmacy Technician.

2.    Employee must be certified with the state of Texas and in good standing.

3.    Completed Sterile ACPE 40 hours of education
