Description The Office of Global Research (OGR), at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), seeks candidates interested in learning about NIAID's infectious disease research, in various regions and across programs with international partners. NIAID conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. What will I be doing? Under the guidance of a mentor, fellows will be exposed to a variety of global health research activities that are STEM-based and focus on infectious diseases of substantial health importance in developing countries. Projects include science diplomacy, bilateral and multilateral research programs, opportunity-driven scientific engagement, communication efforts, and analysis of regional biomedical capacity and research. Why should I apply? You will learn about NIH support mechanisms and collaborative research programs involving NIAID, how to use NIH and NIAID databases for data analysis, how to identify metrics and indicators to evaluate programs, how to compare success across programs, and the role of science diplomacy in international relations. Location Fellows are expected to be fully engaged in-person at NIAID in Rockville, Maryland. Provisions The selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend to offset living and other expenses. Stipend rates are determined by NIAID and based on the candidate’s academic and professional background. NIAID may provide a health insurance supplement if you elect the ORISE health insurance plan, as necessary. Length of Appointment The appointment is typically for three to six months and may be renewed contingent on funding availability. Nature of Appointment This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage ORISE, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and NIAID. Participants do not become employees of NIH, NIAID, DOE, or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Qualifications The candidate should be pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in a relevant field. The degree must have been received within the last five years of the appointment start date. You must also be 18 years or older and be a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) to apply.
