Associate General Counsel

USAA is seeking an experienced Associate General Counsel to provide dedicated legal advice on P&C insurance contracts, claims, and/or coverage.

In this role, you will provide expert legal counsel to business unit leadership in your assigned region, navigate complex legal landscapes and provide effective, practical advice, collaborate with internal teams and stakeholders to achieve USAA's strategic objectives, and utilize your in-depth knowledge to independently address significant organizational matters.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Tampa, FL, Charlotte, NC, and Colorado Springs, CO.

Relocation assistance is available for this position.

Employees who live within 60 miles of a USAA office will be required to work on-site four days a week, regardless of their current work status.

The opportunity involves:

• Independently providing legal counsel to senior leadership to support business objectives and lead regulatory, compliance and litigation risk to USAA.
• Leading sophisticated legal assignments with a high level of business impact and delivering appropriate solutions.
• Effectively communicating with partners and varying levels of leadership in both verbal and written forms. Producing clear and concise legal positions involving highly complex issues.
• Proactively collaborating across USAA and Legal and Advisory Services to mitigate risk.
• Proactively monitoring and analyzing changes in laws, regulations and industry and advising appropriate organizational leadership of such changes in a timely manner. Anticipating potential or future legal and operational issues that present a risk to the organization and proactively engaging with others to identify potential solutions.
• Regularly providing guidance to more junior attorneys and serving as a resource to others in Legal and Advisory Services.
• Providing leadership through cross-functional projects that have a material impact to USAA.
• Effectively managing outside counsel to obtain legal advice.
• Ensuring risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

The candidate should have:

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school.
• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school required.
• Licensed and in good standing to practice law in one state or a territory of the USA.
• 8 years of relevant experience with at least 7 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with key resources and stakeholders, influencing decisions and leading work to achieve strategic goals.

What sets you apart:

• A significant, multi-year track record of P&C Insurance coverage experience, including preparing coverage opinions under Homeowners and Personal Auto policies.
• Demonstrated leadership in mentoring junior attorneys or training peers on state-specific P&C contracts, claims, and/or coverage legal issues.
• US military experience with skills related to one of the following MOS's: Navy (JAG Corp Officer), Marines (4402, 4405, 4406,4410, 4411, 4417), Army (27A), USAF (51JX / 5J0X1)

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $164,780 $314,960.

USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
