We are looking for an experienced Staff Accountant to join a government organization in Kinston North Carolina. This contract-to-permanent opportunity is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting specialist who can step into a hands-on role during a critical year-end and audit period. The position is fully onsite and focuses on delivering accurate financial support, maintaining compliance, and contributing to day-to-day accounting operations within a public-sector environment.

Responsibilities:

• Manage daily accounting activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and maintenance of the general ledger.

• Support year-end close and external audit preparation by organizing records, reviewing balances, and resolving discrepancies.

• Process and review financial transactions to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to government accounting standards.

• Assist with tax-related accounting work, including corporate tax, sales tax, and supporting documentation for required filings.

• Prepare financial reports and schedules that help leadership monitor budgets, expenditures, and overall fiscal activity.

• Work within Munis or comparable financial systems to record data, retrieve reports, and maintain reliable accounting information.

• Investigate variances and accounting issues, then recommend corrective actions to improve financial accuracy and control.

• Collaborate with internal departments to gather documentation and clarify financial details needed for reporting and compliance.

• Prior accounting experience, with the ability to independently handle core staff accountant responsibilities.
• Background in government accounting and familiarity with public-sector financial practices.
• Strong understanding of general ledger processes, reconciliations, and period-end close activities.
• Experience supporting audits and preparing accurate financial documentation.
• Knowledge of tax-related accounting, including corporate tax, sales tax, or related reporting requirements.
• Experience using Munis is preferred.
• Ability to work onsite in Kinston, North Carolina.
• Strong attention to detail and sound judgment when reviewing financial data.
