Job Description

This role is a MIG Welder position within a manufacturing facility in South Bend, responsible for welding a variety of structural components, including floors, side panels, I-beams, and channels. You will use blueprints and measuring tools to fit and weld materials accurately, operate an overhead crane to move materials, and perform high-quality TAC MIG welds to secure structures in place.

Responsibilities

• Perform MIG welding on mild steel components for structural assemblies, including floors, side panels, I-beams, channels, and other structural steel elements.
• Use TAC MIG welding techniques to lock materials in place and ensure strong, secure joints.
• Read and interpret blueprints to determine material placement, weld locations, and assembly requirements.
• Measure materials accurately using a tape measure down to 1/16 of an inch to ensure precise cuts and fits.
• Operate an overhead crane to safely retrieve and move materials from designated locations to the work area.
• Fit and position materials according to blueprints and structural requirements prior to welding.
• Use hand tools and fabrication equipment to prepare, align, and secure components for welding.
• Perform basic weld tests, including butt-joint welds, to demonstrate and maintain welding proficiency.
• Work with structural steel and sheet metal as required for various structural components.
• Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment such as weld helmet and steel toe shoes.
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure equipment is used and stored safely.
• Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production schedules and quality standards.

Essential Skills

• At least 5 years of experience in MIG welding on steel.
• At least 5 years of experience in TAC welding on steel.
• Proficiency in MIG welding techniques, including flux core MIG welding.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints accurately.
• Ability to read a tape measure to 1/16 of an inch.
• Experience welding structural steel and working with structural components.
• Ability to perform and pass a basic weld test using a butt-joint weld.
• Ability to work with mild steel materials.
• Competence in using hand tools and fabrication equipment.
• Ability to operate an overhead crane safely to move materials.
• Strong blueprint reading and structural layout skills.
• Ownership of a personal weld helmet.
• Ownership of steel toe shoes.
• Experience working in a manufacturing or structural steel environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Welding certifications are beneficial and preferred.
• Experience with sheet metal fabrication.
• Strong tape measure and layout skills for structural work.
• Comfort working with structural steel beams, channels, and related components.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and production schedules.
• Solid understanding of safe work practices in a manufacturing setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of South Bend, IN.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
