Registered Nurse - Emergency Department Facility Overview 637 licensed beds Level 1 Trauma Center Teaching Hospital Chest Pain Center Stroke Center Unit Details 61 beds plus surge capacity Typical census: 61 patients Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an Emergency Department RN required First-time travel nurses are welcome Common Patient Types and Diagnoses Chest pain Stroke Diabetes Abdominal pain Motor vehicle collisions Hypertension Stabbings Mental health conditions Patient-to-Staff Ratios Registered Nurse: 1:4 (varies by assigned zone) Licensed Practical Nurse (if applicable): 1:4 Certified Nursing Assistants/Technicians: 4-6 per shift Licenses and Certifications Required Basic Life Support (BLS) Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) - travelers must pass an EKG competency exam Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) National certification in Emergency Nursing is preferred but not mandatory Required Skills and Experience Experience in Level 1 Trauma Emergency Room nursing Proficiency with drips such as Heparin, Insulin, Cardene, Dopamine, Epinephrine, Fentanyl, Propofol, and Levophed Department Support Services CNA assistance with vital signs, glucose monitoring, hygiene care, feeding, ambulation, turning patients, hourly rounding, and patient transport (transport team available) Unit secretary present on the unit Charge nurse available for support Phlebotomy and nurse blood draws provided No dedicated IV/VAT team; PICC team available Respiratory therapy available 24/7 Hospitalist coverage 24/7 Intensivist coverage 24/7 Central telemetry monitoring within the Emergency Department Technology and Equipment Electronic Medical Record system: EPIC IV Pumps: Alaris Medication dispensing system: Pyxis Monitors: Phillips Unit-specific equipment includes: VS3 vital sign monitors Nova Glucose Stat Strips Cardiac telemetry monitoring Portable vital signs monitors (Dynamapp) PCA pain management devices Bladder scanners IV pumps Portable oxygen systems Glucommander Suction machines Bellmont Rapid Infuser, Ranger, Bearhugger Floating Policy Floating assignments occur within the Emergency Department. Orientation Process One day of orientation with educational modules Two days of departmental orientation Scheduling Details Weekend rotation includes 5-6 weekend shifts within a 12-shift, 6-week cycle No on-call responsibilities Holiday work expectations include one shift on major holidays (Thanksgiving or the day after, December 24 or 25, December 31 or January 1) Return to Office (RTO) requests require manager approval Shift length: 12 hours (7 AM–7 PM or 7 PM–7 AM) Schedule repeats every 6 weeks Additional Information Scrub colors: Registered Nurses wear navy; Licensed Practical Nurses wear ceil blue Parking options include free parking around campus or paid parking in decks Unit culture is busy yet team-oriented #J-18808-Ljbffr
