WORKING CONDITIONS AND ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The Executive Function Coach works directly with students who may experience significant emotional or behavioral dysregulation. At times, student behavior may be unpredictable and may include elopement or attempted elopement, pushing, hitting, punching, kicking, scratching, biting, hair pulling, grabbing, throwing objects, dropping to the floor, body slamming, or other potentially dangerous behavior. These behaviors may create a risk of physical contact or injury even when appropriate safety procedures are followed.
The essential functions of the Executive Function Coach position include the following. A qualified employee must be able to perform these functions, with or without reasonable accommodation:
•Remain attentive to the environment and respond promptly when a student demonstrates signs of escalation, unsafe behavior, or attempted elopement.
•Move quickly throughout classrooms, hallways, outdoor areas, stairs, and other school or community settings to maintain appropriate supervision and respond to safety concerns.
•Maintain balance and stability while standing, walking, turning, changing direction, kneeling, stooping, bending, crouching, or moving between the floor and a standing position.
•Maintain sufficient mobility, strength, coordination, and situational awareness to protect personal safety and support the safety of students and others during behavioral incidents.
•Use trained positioning, blocking, redirection, disengagement, and other approved protective techniques when responding to grabbing, pushing, hitting, hair pulling, scratching, or similar behavior.
•Follow a student’s individualized support plan, safety plan, crisis-response procedures, and the principles and techniques taught through Monarch-approved Safety-Care training.
•Use prevention, relationship-based support, environmental modification, verbal de-escalation, regulation strategies, and other nonrestrictive interventions whenever reasonably possible.
•Summon assistance, maintain appropriate supervision, and follow established emergency and incident-response procedures when a situation cannot be managed safely by one employee.
•Participate in physical management or restrictive intervention only when trained and authorized to do so and when permitted by applicable policy, the student’s plan, and law. Physical intervention is not the routine or preferred response to challenging behavior.
•Assist students with self-care, accidents, transitions, mobility, and regulation needs while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and student dignity.
•Lift, carry, push, pull, or reposition materials, classroom equipment, and adaptive equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
•Work for extended periods involving frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, kneeling, stooping, and movement throughout the campus.
Employees must not use unapproved physical techniques, excessive force, punishment, or physical intervention for convenience or as a substitute for appropriate behavioral support. Employees are not expected to place themselves in circumstances involving an imminent and unreasonable risk of serious injury. When conditions exceed the employee’s training or ability to respond safely, the employee must disengage when feasible, obtain assistance, protect other students, and follow Monarch’s emergency-response procedures.
Successful completion and continued maintenance of required Safety-Care or other Monarch-approved crisis-prevention and response training is an essential requirement of the position. Employees must demonstrate competency in the techniques they are authorized to perform and immediately report all injuries, physical assaults, safety concerns, and uses of physical management in accordance with school policy.
The position may involve work in classrooms, offices, outdoor areas, community settings, vehicles, field-trip locations, and overnight retreat environments. Working conditions may include noise, competing demands, emotionally charged situations, unpredictable student behavior, and time-sensitive safety decisions. The employee must be able to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, communicate clearly, and follow established safety procedures during stressful situations.
The Monarch School and Institute will consider reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants and employees in accordance with applicable law.
