Job Summary: The Police Officer I - Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit (TVCU) performs standard Police Officer duties to support the safety and security of the campus community. Performs investigative law enforcement duties for the TVCU under minimal supervision, supporting the investigation of serious offenses such as homicides, violent assaults, and sexual crimes. Conducts interviews and interrogations, processes crime scenes, collects and analyzes evidence, executes search warrants, and prepares detailed reports and court testimonies. Maintains a victim-centered, trauma-informed approach. Collaborates with partner agencies. Additional Department Summary: Drives a University vehicle. Must meet and adhere to established guidelines for the use of a UAPD assigned take-home vehicle. Required Minimum Qualifications: Must be a current Police Officer I in good standing at the University of Alabama. Must have received a "meets expectation" or higher on most recent performance evaluation. Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Skills and Knowledge: Skills and knowledge related to being a Police Officer. Ability to work effectively as a team player. Ability to give and receive constructive feedback. Strong collaboration skills. Ability to build positive relationships with colleagues, partners, and community members. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft clear reports and effectively convey information. Ability to quickly learn and utilize law enforcement software systems. Ability to maintain exceptional precision in all aspects of investigative work. Ability to make effective decisions under pressure and exercise good judgment in complex situations. Thorough knowledge of applicable criminal codes. Demonstrated fortitude and responsibility when handling challenging or sensitive cases. Ability to maintain professionalism and composure during confrontational or difficult situations. Ability to uphold the highest standards of discretion with sensitive case materials and information. Ability to employ trauma-informed practices when working with vulnerable populations. Ability to work effectively with law enforcement professionals across local, state, and federal agencies, as well as multidisciplinary teams. Ability to conduct interviews on sensitive subjects using appropriate, professional language. Ability to perform required evidence collection procedures, including documentation and the photographing or swabbing of intimate areas, when necessary. Strong time management and adaptability skills. Incumbents to this position may spend extended amounts of time investigating graphic and shocking material. Must be available for on-call duty, extended hours, and rapidly evolving situations. Preferred Qualifications: Three (3) years of law enforcement experience as a sworn police officer. Demonstrated investigative expertise in handling complex cases such as homicides, sexual assaults, or other violent crimes.
