Speech And Language Pathologist
Speech and Language Pathologist Qualifications: Possession of a Master's degree from an accredited program, completion of 9 months of supervised clinical experience in Speech and Language Pathology, and passing the PRAXIS Series II Pathology Examination. Able to meet the Office of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) licensing requirements as a Limited License Speech Pathologist or Licensed by LARA Examination in the State of Michigan and holds current ASHA Certification.
Performance Responsibilities: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of IDEA and MARSE. Accurately identify, through comprehensive evaluations, students' specific strengths and weaknesses, helpful evidence-based intervention options, and eligibility for special education under rules for Speech and Language Impairment, Cognitive Impairment, or Autism Spectrum Disorders. Identify, administer, and interpret appropriate testing tools to evaluate communication skills to determine needs, eligibility, and educational impact. Collect necessary, relevant data through the demonstrated ability to administer/interpret/analyze standardized assessments. Provide comprehensive written reports of assessments and evaluations of students that specifically address the reasons for referral. Provide and interpret assessments and evaluations to determine eligibility for special education and identify needs for programs and services. Utilize multiple methods of collecting data, and provide appropriate, measurable goals for intervention and anticipated outcomes from the service. Effectively integrates data obtained from tests and other sources of information, and can communicate these diagnostic findings to other professionals, parents, and pupils in a meaningful way to inform evidence-based decision-making. Develops and implements service plans, including goals and objectives for individual students, which may include case management. Collaborates and consults with students, teachers, parents, paraprofessionals, physicians, and other professionals in the management of speech-language disorders and related eligibility to support the communication needs of students. Provide consultation, coaching, and modeling at the building and classroom levels using current best practice, i.e., a Multi-Tiered System of Supports model. Coaching, collaborating, and consulting with school personnel on interventions and prevention strategies related to communication to improve student performance across the school curriculum. Effectively utilize data and progress monitoring tools when making decisions related to changes in instruction and goals. Provide IEP-directed individual or group services to students. Contribute to team problem-solving procedures required to determine the need for ongoing intervention or further assessment for students with a suspected disability. Meet with colleagues to develop classroom-based approaches to help with one or more students experiencing communication difficulties. Provide feedback, consultation, and recommendations using a collaborative approach with parents regarding their children's strengths and weaknesses, and how best to help them with various obstacles/challenges. Share information with parents, families, and the community regarding helpful information regarding child development, communication disorders, and academic skill development, motivation and learning, common areas of difficulty, resources to parents and their children, and where there is evidence supporting their effectiveness. Identify and coordinate accommodations and modifications of the school environment for a student to obtain access to the general education curriculum and instruction. Provide support to facilitate successful transitions in areas that affect students' learning opportunities. Have a knowledgeable use of tools and systems for student and program data collection and review, program effectiveness measurement, and other quality and efficacy measures. Maintains a high level of confidentiality when working with student information. Complies with established documentation standards. Ensures that speech and language services are provided per the standards of practice established by ASHA and state and federal laws related to speech education. Adheres to the ASHA code of ethics.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Occasionally, Speech Pathologists holding a Certificate of Clinical Competency may be asked to supervise and/or mentor Limited Licensed Speech Pathologists.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds in supplies, which requires bending, stooping, and lifting. The employee must be able to use various instructional materials in the classroom. The employee must use their hands and arms to manipulate objects. The employee must use keyboards, tools, and other controls. The employee must sit and stand for long periods of time. The employee must have normal vision and hearing with or without aid. The employee must be able to move about the assigned location unaided during the day.
