Sr Medical Lab Technologist - Laboratory Medicine

Position Summary The Senior Medical Lab Technologist (Sr. MT) performs oversight functions, in accordance with all pertinent federal and state accreditation agencies, on all diagnostic tests in the medical laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, ensuring validity and accuracy of test results. Supporting the Sr. MLS and general lab supervisor, the Sr. MT assists in oversight of clinical laboratory testing of various complexities while engaging in a no‑harm, high‑quality, consumer‑centric experience and stewardship as a member of Health First laboratory leadership. Primary Accountabilities Performs oversight tasks, in lieu of the Sr. MLS and general lab supervisor, on all clinical laboratory testing of various complexities in a timely and efficient manner using laboratory equipment, devices, or manual methods. Oversees the following benches: clinical chemistry, toxicology, transfusion services, urinalysis, hemostasis, hematology, microbiology, immunology, point of care, or as assigned by lab leadership; performs lab analyses on body fluids including urine, blood, and other specimens. Ensures departmental compliance with all HF policies and procedures, along with federal and state accreditation requirements. Performs and assigns quality control tasks on various laboratory tests to ensure accuracy and validity; assists the lab supervisor in validating new tests, equipment, or methodologies. Performs and assigns regular, periodic equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting tasks on lab analyzers to ensure adherence to established accuracy standards. Demonstrates commitment to meeting departmental goals and continuously improving performance metrics. Competent in electronic medical record (EMR) applications used for patient records and results as established by laboratory procedures; ensures departmental competency in EMR use. Ensures the department has met and completed all initial, semi‑annual, and annual competencies. Maintains availability to meet departmental staffing demands and demonstrates effective time management. Communicates effectively within the laboratory, external clinical departments, other healthcare professionals, clients, and customers, observing AIDET in customer communication and reporting issues and departmental needs to the supervisor. May be required to obtain laboratory specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture if needed. Cross‑trains in other laboratory departments or performs other lab‑related tasks as directed by the supervisor. Minimum Qualifications Education: Associate of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field as outlined by CLIA. Work Experience: Two (2) years as a Medical Lab Technologist. Licensure: Medical Technologist licensure by the State of Florida and in accordance with CLIA. Certification: None required. Skills and Knowledge: Proficiency in required computer applications; ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision; strong critical thinking, prioritization, organization, and written and verbal communication skills in English. Preferred Qualifications Work Experience: Five (5) years as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. Licensure: Lab Supervisors License in the State of Florida. Certification: MLS (ASCP) or formerly MT (ASCP), MT (AAB), MT/MLS (AMT), Specialist Certification by ASCP (SBB, SC, SH, etc.). Physical Requirements Able to endure an 8‑hour workday in periods of high demand. Must pass a color blindness test. Visual acuity and manual dexterity to perform clinical/technical tasks. Hand‑eye coordination to perform tasks. Effective communication with others to exchange information. May require travel to various facilities within and beyond the county perimeter; may require use of a personal vehicle.
